whenever we visit rhinebeck to see our daughter's momma/baby store in rhinebeck, we always look for something interesting to do. attended for my birthday with my family. just great. antique planes doing fantastic stuff plus a place to view the planes. there are not many places like this around so i encourage everyone to attend before there are no more.kids and adults will enjoy.
Wow what these guys can do, scary! Kids will love it and you will too. Pre WW1 planes that still fly. WOW. Plan a trip and stay overnight do you have a full day there. A lot of fun.
A coworker urged me to visit Old Rhinebeck for many years. Finally, I took the opportunity. While some aspects of the airdrome are a little rough around the edges, it is an experience any aviation enthusiast should not pass up. I cannot say enough about the airshow presented on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in early October. I have read about WW1 aviation, but now got to see some of the extremely rare planes actually flying! Not to mention an operational WW1 period tank, automobiles and fire engine. I recommend raising this museum to the top of your bucket list.
Step into the wayback machine to a time of those daring young men and their flying machines, and of small town hokeyness that makes you smile. There was a mixture of early twentieth century aeroplanes, some dating back to 1909. The pilots and ground crew were dressed in period garb, and the master of ceremonies, perched atop a tower, provided a play-by-play of the show, with fact interspersed with humor. We loved seeing the oldest planes attempt to get off the ground, flying barely ten feet high, but thrilling nonetheless. The balloon bursting contest by four biplanes was entertaining, as was the prison-escapee farce. We had put this on the agenda because of the pumpkin bombing, but frankly that wasn't as spectacular as were imagined. They only three about six pumpkins, and they were pretty far away, so it was difficult to see them. If you don't mind sitting on backless, makeshift benches, fine, otherwise bring some camp chairs. There are some food stands, but we didn't indulge. There is a cute gift shop and a museum that we would have visited had we had the time. A fun afternoon (2 hour show).
As well as an aircraft museum, containing very rare types, Old Rheinbeck also stages air displays every weekend from the Spring until mid October. The Saturday show is aimed more at the enthusiast, while the Sunday show is pure family entertainment, with good guys, bad guys, explosions, car chases and girls falling out of aeroplanes!Oh yes, if you have vintage clothes, wear them to the shows!
This was a check off the Old Bucket List. Now where else on Earth can you experience the sights you can here. This is a Great area to visit with Hyde Park near by and the Hudson Valley and West Point with-in 50 miles. But do not overlook this great action packed attraction. You can experience first hand the open cockpit flying in a Bi-Plane and then sit and watch the oldest plane in the world that still flies on a regular bases. Moves show the old planes but here you can relive the thrill of early aviation and the wonder as people first saw airplanes. These fly slow enough and low enough you can really see them not just con-trails. The entire area is a marvel not just the planes flying.
World War I and earlier planes fly during the summer on Sat and Sun in GOOD weather. Also some a little older. Small museum. It is amazing to see a 100 yr old plane in the air. Check their website for schedules.
I have to say I visited for the biplane ride. The rest of the facility was great too but I'd never before flown in this type of plane. Helicopters, commercial jets, small commuter airplanes; done that. I wore my GoPro video camera w/headband and carried my professional camera gear too. On a typical flight there is not to much to worry about with regard to losing photo equipment. My preference was to do some wild and crazy flying but I don't think the other 3 passengers were to keen on that idea. You can book a private flight to get more of a thrill ride. Next time I'm in the area I'll do just that. Nonetheless, it was great! It's perfectly safe so don't hesitate and go for it. Have a look at my included pictures.
If you are into airplanes and the history of them, then this is the place to see. It has a great display of real world war I airplanes on display. The airfield show is fantastic! The pilots do such a great job and the show is also very entertaining! Really loved it!
Take the biplane ride! How many times in a lifetime will this opportunity come up?! Very fun!The museums and old planes, cars and bikes are interesting to view. Some are still in their original state while others are repaired and working. The drive to the aerodrome is remote but a beautiful countryside in NY.
best time ever! no words to explain what a beautiful day we had there! pay for the airplane ride, worth every dollar! the guys volunteering are incredible! I have the pleasure to be with Cori,he took the time to walk me through every airplane there and recommended I took the airplane ride!
My second time to the Aerodrome and it was just as pleasant as the first. Boyfriend and I did a biplane ride and it was so enjoyable. The landing and take-off were perfect and smooth, so if you're nervous about that- don't be. Air show is definitely worth it, it's really amazing what those pilots can do.
Saw a show on the Saturday. Great fun. Some of the museum hangars are looking a little sad and unloved.
We went to the aerodrome last weekend for the World War 1 air show. It was a blast. There is a story that goes along with show, hokey as it is but quite funny. The announcer is great but the real stars are the planes. You sit right along the runway and see some amazing planes take off and land. Some of the stunts are amazing. Most of the flying planes are replicas but exact to the nth degree, but they have originals there too. Along with the old cars, trucks and motorcycles, it is a real feast. The only thing that we couldn't do was take a ride on an old mail plane, that will be next time.
A not-to-be-missed experience. The museum is chock-full of aviation history (and getting a guided tour is nice-nominal extra fee). The highlight is the air show. Although the air show "story" might be considered hokey, it is a lot of fun and is a great way to keep things rolling as you watch these amazing aircraft take off and land - and do tricks. The announcer does a great job telling you about each craft. There are some fun antics and some cool other old vehicles rounding out the afternoon. If you have a bit of extra money, the $75 per person ride up in a biplane is super-cool.Heads-up - the outdoor cafe takes cash only. Expect the air show to take almost 2 hours. The seats for the air show are simple wood planks resting on cut logs. They were ok - the ones in the back are in the shade! - but bring a blanket if you want extra padding or bring your own chairs. Bring a camera! And sit opposite the buildings on the field that are part of the show - the best view of all the action. The "nice" bathrooms are in the museum next to the museum store. There are port-a-potties elsewhere. From where you park you have to cross the road (not a problem) to buy your tickets, but then cross back over, go through the parking lot, and up a somewhat steep hill which may be difficult for some people. And then you go back down the hill, through the parking lot and then into the air show area. There are some cool hangers with stuff to look at along the air show field...but there is a bit of walking involved overall, and some inclines.
