Take a trip back in time to the American Revolution. Very interesting account of the significance of Fort Stanwix to the Revolutionary war. Well worth the time when in Rome.
Fort Stanwix has a lot of things going on in the summer and in October they have a ghost tour very educational place with friendly people
Nice way to kill an hour or so, pretty interesting if you like History, nice film that you should watch first in the new visitor center and best of all no charge to visit
My boyfriend and I were in the area on vacation with my family. It was a rainy day and we were getting a bit antsy inside. Found this place on the web and decided to check it out! Number one everything was free! There were signs around the area that explained everything! There was some construction going on when we were there, but I would go again!
If you are in the area, definitely stop even if for just a quick visit. I recommend Fort Stanwix for anyone interested in New York state history, American Revolution history, native American history, or history in general. This was my second visit to Fort Stanwix, having been there about 1 year ago. On both occasions I was fortunate to have been able to take a tour with a guide. Be sure to look at the NM website to see when tours are offered. For me, it makes the history come alive much more than simply touring on my own and reading. I had the same tour guide both times, but I took away different things for each tour. I've visited many sites within the national parks system and I really like the way they did the museum at Fort Stanwix in particular. They have a small museum but make the most of it by explaining the history from four different points of view - the loyalist trader, the young Continental soldier, the German frontier woman, and the Oneida leader. Another plus for this site is the fact that there are lots of things to touch. There is an abundance of pelts and our guide specifically said that we could touch anything. Even if a particular section of the reconstructed fort was blocked off, if we asked we would be allowed into that room and could handle the items in it.
This is a beautifully restored Revolutionary War fort - well worth visiting. The displays are informative and provide excellent information on the background of the Revolutionary War. It was pouring rain the day we were there so spent most of the time in the visitor center which was very worthwhile. Parking is available near the fort.
Excellent presentation of the local history and how it impacted the Revolutionary War. The Visitor's Center is worth a visit on its own, and has very engaging short films as well as artifacts. We learned about the Iroquois Confederation and how it was divided once the war was under way. The fort itself was amazing, because it showed the various types of lodging each type of soldier or commander lived in. I recommend this site for all ages - very entertaining and informative.
Easy to get to. Amazing history. Other interesting places around the area. Great for all ages. Parking might be a problem on a busy day.
We've visited many NHS forts all across the eastern US, and they range from simple and rather unimaginative to pretty fancy. Because it was raining, we couldn't really see much of the fort itself, but the interpretive center did a great job of presenting the fort and what went on in that area from several different view points! Great job.
Really nice place, typical of what the National Park Service does. Staff was very informative. Restoration of the fort was impressive. Fortunately, the citizens of Rome bought the land, tore down the buildings that had covered the fort and partnered with the Park Service to build this for the people. In my area, th
This is a well-presented reconstruction of a pre-Revolutionary War fort. It's well worth an hour or two, especially if you're in the area, have kids, or have a strong interest in US history.
Loved the fact that we had a guided tour and that the National Historic site has no admission price! Great place to go!
I enjoyed Fort Stanwix quite a bit. I went mid-week and there were only about 5 other people touring the fort itself, but a few dozen people were going through the interactive exhibit at the visitor's center. The visitor's center appeared to be quite new and had some interesting exhibits and items for sale. The reconstruction of the original fort is pretty impressive to say the least and some of the original artifacts were fun to see (like the hearth for example). The self-guided tour was more than sufficient. Almost all of the fort is accessible by foot and I took a stroller with me that fit into about 80% of what was available to tour. If you are someone who enjoys history (especially Revolutionary War-era), you should check it out.
there is a really interesting display in the willet center - lots to seethe fort itself has been rebuilt and is a replica of the original. They did a wonderful job of replicating the barracks and the interiors and I think there were even some original items found during the archaeology of the fort...pretty interesting!!
If your a history buff then this is a good place to go. Fort Stanwix was a American fort built during the revolutionary war time. The monument is a reconstruction of the original Fort. It is a self guided tour but, there is staff there also with help answering any questions you might have. They also have a film that runs every hour to help you learn what the Fort living was like and every room has artifacts that were used during that time and give you an idea of how people lived back then. It was very educational. Donations are excepted.
