If you have never been island camping before you have got to try it. The Indian Lake Islands have camp sites that are boat access only on Islands in Indian Lake in Indian Lake, NY. The camp sites are well run by the DEC and are kept clean and safe. They are very strict about check-in and check-out times so you can be sure your site is ready. The DEC also keeps an eye on things making sure everyone is abiding by the rules. The sites are spread out so that you feel like you have the island to yourself. A very unique and fun experience.
Hiking an swimming at the lake and kids went to the top of a hill... several campers on marked areas, very safe...loved it.
I started planning this trip as an end of summer, moving away from my friends sort of thing. Our goal was to find the most secluded campsite in NY state. I think we did pretty good. I wont disclose which site because i would like to be able to visit it in the future, but we were greeted with a large white sand beach and running brook. The whole thing looked out over the lake and surrounding mountains. Great stuff. At night we enjoyed a full moon and a billion stars. In the morning the park ranger came around by boat to check up on the campers. We spent the day hiking and fishing. And despite a freak thunderstorm and near miss with lightning, its still the best day I have ever had camping. Night 2 was a bit loud because of a boisterous bunch down lake. Sound travels rather well over water. We paid them back with our group rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody by firelight. It poured all of Sunday as we packed. I think nature was tired of us.Overall, best camping experience I have ever had. Dont over estimate the size of your boat. We nearly sank with us and the gear.
The Islands are a great escape from the typical state campgrounds. No neighbors in your ear. Quiet with good fishing. All sites are waterfront sites!
Very scenic area with many mountain hikes to fabulous views. Beautiful lakes and less bugs than in Connecticut, which was an unexpected bonus, although I don't think it is normally like that. Many things to do in the area. I just wish there was a grocery store in town! We did white water rafting, hiking, fishing, jeeping and more. Perfect place to escape when you just bought a new 2012 Wrangler 4 door jeep.
