Wonderful place to visit for history buffs and novices alike. We visited during the Old Stone Fort Days in October. It was great to see the re-enactments and realistic settings in the beautiful Schoharie Valley. The fort holds a vast array of equipment used during battle and other artifacts, they also have a library with a wide range of books and journals for review that could be used for research purposes. In addition to visiting the Stone Fort, we toured the adjacent cemetery which dates back to the 1600's. This is a great place for a family visit and also for helping to foster a love of history to our youth.
We stopped by on our way through Schoharie County and Middleburgh. Docent was very knowledgeable and accommodating. Lots of Revolutionary War history here and even early 18th Century history of the Palantines in this region. Unfortunately we came later in the day on Sunday and could not visit the other houses. I would definitely recommend the Palantine House while in Schoharie as well as the buildings maintained by the Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association. For those history buffs, Please be sure to stop at the Old Fort Museum Gift shop for some great publications on Schoharie history in particular but also Civil War and Mohawk Valley.
Great for families and teaching kids (old enough to understand) about the past Revolutionary war and the surrounding area. Includes two museum buildings, a school house, barn with farm equipment, law office and two(?) cemeteries--across the street from each other. Just reading the tombstones is interesting enough. Our guide answered questions and really got into the uniform/guns, explaining all in detail. Tricky finding it, but if you have a GPS (I used a googled map), you should be ok. The locals helped me with details.
