This theater is a place to be preserved! A nice venue for shows, concerts, movies and other events. The decor inside is a must see.
This place is gorgeous. I love the marquee outside - just like the old days. It looks like they have been working on areas and it shows. I love the woodwork. The lobby if beautiful.
The Stanley was built in 1928 in the Mexican Baroque style, and is, indeed, grand, with gold leaf and leaded crystal abounding. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally, it was the city's largest movie theater, holding almost 3,000 seats, including the loge,It was spruced up in the last few years, returning it to its 1928 glory and with a larger platform and more comfortable seats. Frequently, it hosts Broadway shows and pop stars as well as local shows. It hosts the most tech shows in NYS. It serves cocktails and snacks during intermissionIt also hosts antique shows and graduations.Parking can be a little difficult because of the many good restaurants in Utica. It is 3 blocks (.4 mi.) from the Munson Williams Proctor Institute.Currently, its biggest competitor is the Turning Stone Casino, an Oneida Indian establishment 24 miles away, However, the Stanley is beautiful, while the Casino is utilitarian,
Big and beautiful, built in the 20's as a state of the art movie palace, then air conditioned...with current multimillion dollar improvements to accommodate the most elaborate Broadway shows The Moody Blues and many great acts have played there...as have the late Van Cliburn, Arthur Rubenstein and more. Acoustics are truly superb..and all seats are good. I love the balcony where I think the sound is the best. The lobby features a stairway by the fella who designed the main stairway on the Titanic. Nothing to dislike.
This theater has been a part of my life since I was a young girl. Having undergone renovations within the past several years, the theater is a beautiful venue for events from Broadway Theater League shows to small parties. Make sure you enjoy a visit if you are from out of town. And if you are a resident, join in the fun at all the great events!
I started going to the Stanley when I was an adolescent (many years ago). In fact, the concerts at the Stanley were very influential in getting me passionate about classical music. I will never forget the concerts in which I performed. It's a great place, with terrific acoustics.
The Stanley Theatre at 259 Genesee Street is something you cannot miss if you are in Utica. I was looking for a stop to rest for our long drive back to Canada from the Boston area. I noticed Utica on the map and Googled Utica and found Stanley theatre. Their website http://www.thestanley.org/about/architecture/ gave me a glimpse of a beautifully restored theatre which I new I had to see, so much so, we booked a night stay just to see it. My family and I were not disappointed. Nicole our tour guide was gracious and generous with her time and showed us everything from the main theatre to backstage and even the underground tunnels. She also offered a great deal of history and current events for the Stanley too. I highly recommend booking a tour if you love old architecture and beauty.
Please visit the Stanley if you have the opportunity. My daughter was in a dance competition recently, and she said she would remember for the rest of her life that she got to dance there.
My husband and I have enjoyed many performances here over the last few years and continue to be in awe of the excellent renovations that have brought new life to this theater. The new sound system and extended stage have allowed a wide variety of performances. It is such a joy to have a wonderful Art Center so close!
Although this building was in terrible disrepair years ago, it has been restored to all its former elegance and more. We have seen several shows and heard several musical concerts there and always find it to be totally enjoyable. Its now an elegant old theater with a great ambiance.
I have been here for a few plays, musicals, and performances. The building really brings you back to old architecture and helps you appreciate how things were once built. My only complaint about the place would be the heating and cooling, as it seems each time I go it's either warm with stuffy air or chilly to where I need a sweater.
The venue is beautiful although the seating becomes uncomfortable after an hour or so. The shows they bring in are usually excellent. It's a great night out and offers some culture to the area.
What a gorgeous setting! We recent attended a concert here and were so impressed. The Stanley is just beautiful - the lobby, balcony, all the ceilings, lighting, chandeliers, fixtures, the theater itself - they are all amazing. And that the historical significance of this structure has been preserved says volumes about the caring people in Utica. It is a must see when you are in the area.
We saw Chicago (the band) with the Utica Symphony Orchestra. WOW !!!! What a venue... Not only was the sound excellent but the theater was absolutely beautiful!! If you are in town you should check out what is playing. The feel of broadway in Utica. I think most seats (if not all) would provide a good view. Enjoy!
Absolutely beautiful place!!! The show was great as usual but the building is something to see in its self!
