A scenic, hilly walk through a cemetery that starts at about 1700 and is active to day and see the architecture of grave stones as they change through the centuries. There is the fenced in enclave of Washington Irving and his family that helped start this cemetery as well as other famous people like Chrysler and the Rockefellers. Maps are available for guidance.

Beautiful historic 90 acre cemetery full of interesting headstones, statues and mausoleums. Many notable people buried here including Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, Elizabeth Arden, Leona Helmsley, Harry Helmsley and of course, Washington Irving. The Old Dutch Church is not technically part of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery but they are right next to each other so you will want to take a look at that. We were also able to go inside. Highly recommend going on one of the tours offered. Our tour guide was very entertaining and knowledgable about the cemetery. Some fun trivia: Parts of the 1970 movie "House of Dark Shadows" were filmed at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

The idea of giving a 1, 2 or 3 star rating to this American treasure seems like lunacy. Kind of in the category of, if you look for something to complain about in a place you'll find it. So let's look for some things to complain about.....There are way too many dead people in this cemetery. Thousands. Way too many famous and historically significant people. Hundreds. The trees are a little too beautiful, seriously what are you feeding them? It's way too peaceful. Why does it look so nice in every season? Is it trying to make other cemeteries self conscious? The folks at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery run a cemetery and a major tourism spot in one and they do it with real professionalism. The site is more than worthy of a visit for more reasons than you can list and they are worthy of your patronage. The town is lovely. The parking could be better. Go see it. And if you come back to tripadvisor to leave a sh^^% review for a cemetery, you've obviously reached the point in your life where you will complain about anything.

What a great place to spend an October afternoon. There is such a feel of history here. After visiting Washington Irving's home we came to visit his grave and then walked around a bit. Also saw Andrew Carnegie's monument with its beautiful Celtic cross. No visit to Sleepy Hollow is complete without seeing this cemetery.

The area of Sleepy Hollow has a vast number of attraction to visit like Washington Irvington House where the headless horseman was wrote.

My family & I love old cemeteries and this is one of the best. From the creepy old mausoleums to the fancy one for Leona Helmsley and then the graves from the revolutionary war! We tried to visit some of the other attractions in the area but they are all part of some tour package, this was the only place we found where we could go at our own pace on our own schedule.

We went on the Classic Tour (different themed tours are available) on a chilly fall afternoon. Our tour guide Ro was wonderful! She was friendly and knowledgeable, and she clearly loves her work. If you are interested in history, you should enjoy this tour. Because we went in mid-November after the Halloween rush, we were a small group and so we made a couple stops to points of interest not usually on this particular tour. It was great to learn stuff about our own hometown (or county as the case may be).

Washington Irving himself is buried here along with other famous people. Tours are fascinating and offer information about the architecture of monuments. This is an active cemetery and while there we caught a glimpse of a formal military service underway. Park alongside the cemetery along "Sleepy Hollow Avenue" and take a peak at the actual Sleepy Hollow stream alongside the road. This area has heightened tourist activity in October and the traffic is intense! The total area comprises 85 acres but the guided tours are limited to about an hour so the hiking is not bad for us oldsters. We went during the day and missed the atmosphere of lantern light but perhaps managed to see more that way. Note the Old Dutch Church which is a separate attraction. The fee mentioned is for a guided tour, you can guide yourself without a fee but will miss a great deal of information.

Sleepy Hollow is a tiny, quaint town, probably most famous for its large historic cemetary where Washington Irving is buried. The Halloween Cemetary Tours are really excellent, with a number of themes you can choose from. They are led by experienced guides and are in the dark, with hand-held lamps providing the only light. We went with a fairly large group, some of whom were children, and it proved a fascinating and quite lovely 2 hour tour. I think someone interested in the cemetary would get far more from it with an experienced guide than on their own....the stories were quite fascinating and we really did learn a ton about the people who are buried there, as well as the reasons for certains styles of masoleums and headstones. if you come for the tours, give yourself PLENTY of time to drive there as the town is flooded with people on Halloween night. Signage is not really clear either, so we got a bit lost and were panicking about possibly missing our tour! As it was, we were a half hour late, but they held it for us as so many other people got confused, lost or were simply stuck in traffic. Next time we will leave a much bigger window for travel time.

I never would have thought this cemetery would have been a beautiful as it was. Make sure you stop at the front and get a map before driving around so you can visit some key locations. Definitely visit at end of October / beginning of November for the beautiful colors.

Came here around Halloween with just about everyone else in the tri-state area. It was very crowded, but so worth it. Tons of old headstones and mausoleums to look at. Just have to be careful since the roads inside the cemetary are pretty narrow and can barely fit two vehicles across.You can take a guided tour or just explore by yourself. Definitely print out a map online before you go so you can easily find out where some of the more notable "residents" reside in the cemetary.

I can't believe I"m rating a cemetery, but this place was so cool to see. Not only is it really old, its really big too! Me and my husband just took a drive to see what it was all about, and we found ourselves really enjoying the drive through. We went yesterday (11/9/14) and the colors of the tree's were absolutely beautiful. You drive up and down hills, pass by a little river, go over the headless horseman bridge. Along the drive you will see famous people's tomb's. I didn't realize how many famous people were buried at this cemetery also. Rockefeller, Washington Irving, Elizabeth Arden, Harry & Leona Helmsley, and more. Definitely worth checking out!

For our family fall vacation we decided to visit the Sleepy hollow cemetery during the day. Fall gives it a distinct look and feel to this place.Some mausoleums are impressive in size and design, others are pretty old yet they have a charm.You can drive around the place in your car or walk, I would suggest walk because it is very relaxing.There's one place, behind the civil war monument, were the weathered angels are, that you have an amazing look at the mountain and village.If you're a fan of the headless horseman, just keep in mind that the original bridge doesn't exist, it was weathered down probably a few hundred years ago, now there's a wooden bridge that looks old but still keeps the charm and spook.We really enjoyed the fall colors in this place!We now have in our wish list a Night tour...

We went on a bus trip over the 10/24/14 weekend and one of the stops was a tour in this cemetery. We had a private tour of the cemetery which, as expected, a lot of the history was about Washington Irving and the Headless Horseman. Our guide gave us so many interesting tidbits regarding how the characters of the story were created. PLUS -- she also explained some of the different tombstone designs and also brought Barnabus Collins from "Dark Shadows" into the mix. There is a fee for a tour and, I believe, there are different types of tours, so you should visit their website. Also, around Halloween, we returned to this cemetery to hear a storyteller tell the Headless Horseman story. This was done in the Old Dutch Church there in the cemetery. This is also a must-see if you get a chance. Again, there is a fee for this.All in all this was a great time and I highly recommend this.
