Great mountain with good and large ski trails, well signalized, good equipment for rental. Good food in the restaurants, but the store is quite expensive.
We had a great Skiing weekend here. Great slopes for all groups from beginner to pros. Nice Parks in the slopes... great time with all our snowboard friends. That being said, day 2 of our skiing weekend was shortened by half due to Power Cuts. A few times we were stuck on the lifts for more than 30 minutes and faced long lines to get to the few working lifts. While it's understandable that power cuts can happen any where, I can't comprehend why then not be prepared for this kind of incidents and have enough diesel to power all lifts, since this was apparently the problem they told us they were facing. It's unacceptable to keep people stuck up on lifts on extremely freezing weather. It is sometimes best to remain close for people's health and safety's sake. And this is an old olympic stage.Nevertheless, enjoy your time here because it is worthy when there is power
The skiing part of this review is not aimed at those who are confident skiing blues and blacks. This part of the review is for people like me, who skied a few times as a kid, not at all as a teenager, and only twice so far as an adult. Someone who has friends and family who ski, and would happily ski more but isn't experienced. I skied greens and like two or three easy blues in Colorado once. That's my level, and that's what I'm reviewing. Whiteface is not really a mountain for skiers like me. There aren't a lot of options for greens and low blues. Between the limited green & low blue trails and the icy condition, it's not a good teaching mountain. The lower mountain (Bear Lift) runs are nice and wide with some interesting bumps, but the lift is pretty slow and the trails are pretty short. It's such an awful slog over to the Bear Lift, too. You can go halfway up the mountain on the Face Lift and take Easy Way + Boreen all the way down, but it's the only green path that goes down the mountain so you will do it over and over again. It's not really a cruising mountain which is the style of our blue skier. Wilmington Trail is rated as blue, but the black diamond skier in our party said it would really be rated as a blue-black in Colorado, and that our solid blue square skier would hate it and hate him if he took her up there (he was right). During the week, the mountain is practically deserted. It almost feels like your own private ski club which is pretty amazing. No wait to pick up your lift tickets, no wait or next to no wait for the lifts, amazing. The lift guys were all really, really pleasant dudes. When Friday and Saturday hit, the slopes did get more crowded and the really skilled skiers/boarders aren't very considerate about sharing the mountain. Upstairs in the base is the Cloudspin Lounge which serves burgers, beers, wings, a really delicious chili in a sourdough bread bowl, etc. The waitresses there were consistently rude, slow, and miserable. Staff in the cafeteria-style area downstairs were all very friendly. The waitstaff in the wine bar on the premises were fantastic. Parking was free and reasonably close, with a handy loading zone right in front of base.I'm glad we went to this mountain. It was really cool to have the mountain just about to ourselves for the most part, and we had a blast in Lake Placid. I don't know if I would come back though, due to the limited options for my skiing level. The pros outweigh the cons for at least one really great visit, but I remain undecided if they warrant a second trip.
First trip skiing at White-face Mountain, the parking situation was also good, not too far away if you had to park. Loved the pull in to drop off or pick up your skis and stuff. They don't rush you out. Very friendly at this mountain. I was very surprise when I went to purchase my lift tickets. I was expecting at least a 1 hour wait time on line outdoors in the freezing cold, however, not at this place, got on line with two people in front of me and it was indoors to purchase lift tickets unlike other closer ski locations in Pennsylvania(Camel Back) or New York (Hunter, Wyndham) etc. Like many other Skiing facilities through out the states that we visited. this place was not even too crowed at all. Wait times to get on lifts was never more than 3-5 minutes on line. This mountain also has a gondola to ride up to the top of the mountain to take pics. Great view. Really enjoyed what this mountain has to offer.
This mountain has something for everyone! Daredevils can summit the mountain and FACE challenges for every level of skiing/riding. Easy cruisers can be easily accessed for families and beginners. All lifts and amenities are laid out nicely and you definitely get an Olympic caliber experience here. We will return to this mountain for sure. We stayed at the Willkomenhof B & B less than two miles away, and it was great.
We recently skied 2 days at Whiteface Mountain. It was over 90% open and had received about 12" of snow the week before we arrived. The conditions for the most part were great except for a few icy patches. With the cold weather, lift lines were virtually none existent and we were able to get in a lot of runs. We also enjoyed a couple of après ski drinks & a bite to eat in the Cloudspin lounge prior to heading back to Lake Placid for the night. If you are looking for a good couple of days skiing, I would recommend Whiteface as it has the best vertical in the East and a variety of runs to suit all types of skiers.
Be prepared for a little chill at the top of the mountain, but there is a resturant at the top that served the most awesome roasted cauliflower soup! we took our 2 Australin Sheperds with us, their first trip up a mountain, we all had a great time! I was a bit nervous about hiking the "girls" all they way up the MTbut i was able to take the elevator to the top LOVEDIT!
Have been to Wface skiing many times and it has been very good but this trip for Empire Winter Games (alpine) didn't start off that way. Shortly after arriving they lost power, went down to zero lifts then to 1 lift (2 hrs to do a run) and finally got more back but it wasn't til 2pm. Had trouble finding the broken connection, I heard but very frustrating for all. Two weeks earlier lost power. They need to try to improve back up if they want to hold big events. Unfortunate for such a beautiful mountain.
My son, who has been snowboarding for many year on Whiteface, brought a first time visitor with him this year. For me, the best part was seeing the look on the look on the face of a typically hard to impress 18-year old when he he told about seeing the top of the mountain and its surrounding view for the first time. Unfortunately, it was a very cold and windy day, but there's nothing anyone can do about that this winter. The advance sale tickets they bought on-line were a great value!
We only did the Gondala ride, but what a beautiful mountain. Great views and a fun experience for kids. Got great pics at the top. Can't wait to try again when the kids learn how to ski.
One of the most stunning peaks in both winter and summer. Both skiers and hikers will appreciate. The surrounding region is full of wonderful restaurants and outdoor things to do for all ages. Child friendly with reasonably priced vacation options as well as elegant great camps and lodges. A real favorite of ours.
Definitely the longest vertical on the east. I was confused with the gondola service. It was open the windy day with more people but close the non-windy day with less people. It looked like they use it whenever gets busy. The grooming is much better in Vermont. Corduroy lasts for less than 2 h ( too superficial, not deep enough)Kids had fun in the blacks. Restaurants were good but someway slow.
Just returned from a ski trip to Whiteface. Very fun for the entire family - all at different abilities. Our 8 year old son was able to do many of the runs (including the Gondola which was a highlight of the trip). Bear's Den was a perfect learning hill for our 4 year old. Changes we'd make for next time - try to go during a weekday. Less busy than weekend (Friday was great despite cold). Also both my children were not fans of the ski school - but I think each child is different here.Overall a good experience.
From the moment we pulled up to unload skis and kids, to the ticket purchase and reloading the car (crazy mad rush of cars at the end of the day) the staff were wonderfully upbeat and helpful.A great visit. Will definitely return.
New York state probably isn't on everyones list of skiing venues. Even some of the skiers I talked to on the mountain were asking why I came here rather than go to Colorado. Firstly, we were visiting friends in New York, not Colorado, so that's why we came here for a few days skiing. I have to say we weren't disappointed either. The snow was good, mainly packed and a bit icy, and a good proportion of the runs were open. The olympic runs were mostly closed but there was enough open to suit all abilities. They have a lot of snow making capability here to keep things ticking over. I was told the mountain does not get a lot of powder days. If that's what you crave then maybe you should head for Colorado. However, we had four very enjoyable days skiing here and I would come back if I was in the area.
