We were looking for something local and small to visit on a Sunday afternoon with only a couple of hours to spare. The NYT had written about the house and gardens a couple of weeks before. 6 of us decided to visit it, and we were all pleased. The tour was fun, but the gardens are what is worth the visit. Admission is free, but donation are accepted. It is hard to believe that this remains on a 100x100 plot. And, reading about the programs held there, we were truly impressed.
Picturesque, peaceful place for birds, flowers. Ideal for special occasions like weddings with it's Victorian setting. Great for photographers & lovers of nature with the seasonal floral displays. Recommend the house tour at least once to learn about the family who donated the site
I went in the spring time and most recently Dec. I went to a wreath making class and paid almost nothing and all the supplies are included. It was so festive...during the spring I sat in the garden and had a very detailed house tour with the most wonderful knowledgeable and dedicated volunteers. (forget to mention how beautiful the house looked with all the Victorian Christmas decorations). The best part was taking home their home made honey from their own bee hive . Great for their constant events tours and a day of Victorian history.
It's a slice of Queens history in our backyard. We'll go back in spring and summer for the seasons' activities.
