The grounds are really nice. Very quiet, you don't feel like you are in NYC. The museum setting was very nice. There were not a lot of relics within the museum (which I like, you aren't overwelmed). Nice.
What a treasure! Situated on the very northern end of Manhattan Island, The Cloisters, fashioned after a medieval monastery, houses one of the great collections of Medieval Art in North America, as an extension of the Met. Exquisite artistic examples of the period can be viewed within its wall, but it is an island of tranquility perched high above the Hudson River. Hard to believe the rest of Manhattan sits but a few miles south. Romantic day trip, not easily reached but you are greatly rewarded for the effort. Try and make a reservation at the nearly New Leaf Café, a cozy restaurant hidden in the woods. Even for a drink.
One of the better small museums anywhere Great collection of antiquities and well worth seeking out this small gem.The Cloisters is small enough to get through it intimately yet its collections are very deep and also informative. The buildings themselves are truly lovely also If its the unique and special you seek gives this a go.
Not many tourists will make the trek to the Cloisters, so you should! It's quite a ride out there on the subway (be sure and map your route out), but totally worth it! You'll be surrounded by art, architecture, and antiquities as far back as the 1400's. And it's quiet....sooooo quiet, you'll love the escape from the busy hustle and bustle of NYC. Take your time at the Cloisters, plan to spend the afternoon. It has beautiful views, courteous staff, and a museum store full of fascinating books. It's isolated, so if you're hungry, eat first before heading out there. Not to be missed!!!!
This would probably be very interesting for travelers who have not been to Europe. If you have done some European traveling, the Cloisters may not be that impressive. Some of the artifacts were interesting, but the architecture was just average to me. We enjoyed the park around the Cloisters very much though; it is fairly quiet (being out of the way) and had some great views. If you take the subway up, you'll have to walk through the park to get from the station to the monastery. As the Cloisters is part of the Met, you can pair these two activities and only pay one entrance fee if you visit both within a week. Suggested entry fee is $20 per adult, but you have the option of paying whatever you want.
I have visited the Clositers on several occassions and it is always such a pleasure. No only do you get to see the famous unicorn tapestries, but a wealth of intricatly created medieval art is displayed as well. The historic gardens are wonderful to stroll through as well the view of the Hudson.
I grew up across the street from the cloisters, and time has not changed it. Well that is not quite true, it appears that it all belongs to NYU now. Kind of like being in a different country.
This museum was on my bucket list for years and years. Ive always been interested in seeing all of the artwork and beautiful grounds Ive heard so much about. I visited by myself so I was able to take my time and look at what I wanted for as long or short as I wanted. I took tons of pictures and tried my best to read up on the art I was viewing. The place was packed on a summer day. I remember seeing a sign to get in was like $25 or you could pay what you could which is what I did. LOL. I had to store my backpack in the locker which was fine with me because it was easier to maneuver in and out the crowd, The educational history, architect, grounds (gardens, flowers, statues) and overall scenery were breathtaking. This place is a must see!
Take the subway uptown, way uptown, walk up a decent sized hill, and you'll find yourself in the beautiful Cloisters. The buildings themselves are beautiful, quite a peaceful. The artwork in such a setting conveys a real sense of the middle ages. I never get tired of visiting. There are peaceful walkways, fountains, places to sit. And then there are the lovely grounds all around if the weather is nice (which is why I don't recommend a Winter visit). The gift shop is also a great place to pick very nice nicknacks (a cut above most gift shops). The only negative is that the cafe is overpriced and not very good. Still, you're there for the gorgeous rooms, artwork, and gardens, not for the food.
