I've been to this museum a few times and there are always new exhibits to see. There are some exhibits that are a part of the permanent collection and display while some other items are swapped out from time to time. The large middle area of the room is where they set up temporary displays from various time periods. Currently, the main temporary exhibit is all about Gen. Benedict Arnold and it does a great job of presenting all of his amazing heroic accomplishments all the way to his downfall and national disgrace. The permanent displays around the perimeter of the divided room include Revolutionary War displays, Civil War displays, 19th Century conflicts, WW1 and a decent WW2 era collection. They have rotated Korean, VietNam, and Middle Eastern conflict displays from time to time but those aren't currently out unfortunately. I really enjoyed the OIF and OEF displays that I took part in on my previous visit but unfortunately, those aren't on display at this time. That really is my only complaint about this place, it's too small to properly present all of these historic military treasures all the time. One of the interesting times to visit here is during their annual Night at the Brewseum fund raiser event that really is a small beer and wine fest inside the museum. The next one is coming up at the end of this month! The M4 Sherman tank that they used to have behind the museum was sent out for restoration a couple years ago and is now ready to come back as soon as this darn snow melts. It will be placed on a concrete pad out in front of the museum once it comes back this Spring. Being an Army tanker myself, I'd love to see more armored vehicles become part of the collection here!
It's ok, an interesting building with a couple of displays of how it used to look, and a superb painting of the very important role of NY troops in WW1 but it is not enormously engaging. Old-fashioned but for the zero price (!) well worth it.
Shows the big picture using the small details of a soldier's life. Displays are set up in chronological order.
Having parents who were in the military, I find the museum a must-see. It contains many authentic pieces of different campaigns, from the Revolution through modern day.
We've been before, and it keeps getting better. The Civil War and WWII exhibits are excellent. They were very helpful with question we had.
If you have an hour or two worth a stop in. Has exhibits from the Revolution, WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam...plus others. Nice museum store.
If you are a history buff, this is your kind of museum. Very interesting and informative. Excellent displays. Certainly worth the price of admission.
self guided tours take you through nearly 300 yrs of military history in the New York area very informative.
This is worth stopping into just to get an idea of the varied military history of NY state. The staff is very helpful and ready to answer any questions. A great destination.
I was impressed by the displays and how much New York has contributed to the military history of the United States. Also the building is beautiful. This museum very helpful and friendly. Except for the 9/11 Memorial with photos of the New, USS New York (LPD-21) it was disappointing that there was no mentioning of any NYS National Guard response to events in Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. etc. Otherwise 5 stars would have been appropriate rating.
The museum has exhibits starting with the early days of the revolution to the lasst days of WW 11. A tour starts with the Revolution working to the War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, War with Spain ending with World Wars 1 & 11. Exhibits include weapons, uniforms, medical & dental kits & a number of cannons. The Civil War has the largest exhibit. Here is information about Prisoners & Prisons, Battle Flags, large selection of rifles, carbines, revolves, swords & scabbands and early photography. The wall are filled with countless words & photos on each era. If a visitor reads every word, they could easily spend two hours. Photography is permitted, however NO FLASH. A flash can damage the uniforms. All staff members are very friendly & helpful. If a visitor has a relative that served in the N.Y.S. military of any era or the N.Y. National Guard, the museum can check the state's archives for the relative's record. NO admission, however donations are appreciated.Hours: Tuesday-Saturday. 10:00 to 4:00.NOTE: The museum's parking is limited to street only, NO parking lot. Two blocks WEST on High Rock Avenue is a large FREE public lot. About a 7-8 minute walk to the museum.A visit is recommended.Jack L., Syracuse, New York.
NYS Military Museum is a nice homage. It covers most wars & NY serviceman that served our Country & State well. There is also a 911 Memorial with photos of the New, USS New York (LPD-21), built with steel from the Twin Towers . Make sure you do not miss the WW 1 exhibit, Bunkers and all.
It is in the old armory and has an extensive collection of NYS military history. The price is right. Great place to go on a Tuesday.
parking is difficult, the museum is on the first floor of an old armory. they cover all the wars with uniforms and weapons. they ask for a donation worth the stop perhaps 1 1/2 hours.
Great facility, lots of info to read, each conflict broken down into sections of the museum but they never talked about NY contributions to Desert Storm or any of the conflicts following that (war in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, response to Haiti earthquake, etc, leading to today. The NY Guard and Reserve response to 911, etc. Instead of donating, we bought numerous gifts from the gift shop. Could have had more on the Revolutionary War.
