The Tang Teching Museum and Art Gallery bosts some of the most beautiful architecture and the galleries are vast. This small outer appearing museum is out together very well, from the exhibition design, the lighting to the amazing staff. Love this museum!
The Tang Teaching Museum was one of my favorite places to visit while living in Saratoga Springs. The exhibitions are well designed with unique artists from all over the world. The size is nice as well with three floors! There's also a little shop to buy souvenirs and other trinkets.
The Tang is a wonderful modern art museum located on the campus of Skidmore College. There are several galleries which feature changing exhibitions. You can go every month and there will be something interesting to explore. The day we went even featured an installation piece in the elevator! The works displayed are always interesting, though you may not like it. Isn't that what art is all about? A half day would be fine to schedule. They have a very nice, but small gift shop. Many times, the artists are available to discuss their works. I consider myself lucky to live so close that I can go to this frequently. There are recommended donations suggested at the entryway.
Excellent exhibits and and a lovely lay-out make this a perfect half-day visit. The small gifts shop has an terrific selection of items if you are looking for unusual gifts.
wonderful museum featuring mostly new and not so new artists. most are of the interesting venue type. worth the time to go and just look. you will be glad you did
The ugliest building on the ugliest college campus in North America. The outside looks like a Soviet bunker if the bunker's blueprints got folded at weird angles and everyone involved in construction was too afraid to speak up and built it with all the folds still in.This place is invariably filled with the kind of "art" that earns the sneer quotes I just put around the word. Here's a tip for aspiring artists: if your exhibit requires an essay to explain why it's good, it's bad. Art should be universal and accessible to everyone. It's meant to convey deeper emotions and themes that transcend cultural and social boundaries, creating a common, harmonious experience. A good artist's work speaks for itself.Unless every artist featured here has been trying to express "vexatious and awful" they are uniformly wide of their mark.If you are completely talentless at art but great at BSing in postmodernist lingo, you should have a pretty easy time getting an exhibit in the Tang. For anyone who's ever visited and hated what you saw: don't be ashamed to admit you didn't like or understand the exhibit out of fear you will be considered "lowbrow." This is an Emperor's New Clothes type scam going on and nobody understand or likes this garbage any more than you do.I gave it two circles instead of one because there's a lot of ironic enjoyment to be had if you go as a group specifically to make fun of the "art" and the pretentious "intellectuals" who claim to take it seriously. I imagine if you get drunk beforehand it will greatly enhance the experience.
We stumbled upon this little gem while touring Skidmore College. The exhibit was an installation that had a wading pool with floating dishes that clanked into each other making sounds. We were a bit rushed, as we were with a tour, but delighted to see such an innovative and fresh installation in a small liberal arts college.
This is a wonderful art museum on the campus of Skidmore College. They have several differentart exhibitions, so you will never get tried of going there. They art work is sometimes very contemporary; but it is good to see different types of art work.
Thanks for the review. We think the museum is cool, too!
Nice space. very contemporary art and some of it not particularly good or appealing. doens't take much time to get thru the place.
We only had a chance to see one small exhibit because the staff was in the middle of prepping the next big exhibition. However, we were warmly welcomed in to see what we could see and we were fortunate enough to run into an art department professor who gave us a wonderful history and background on this up and coming artist from Brazil. Don't miss this stop!
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to the museum. In addition to our exhibitions, we also have family-friendly art-making activities on Saturdays that are free and open to the public. Just call the museum at 518-580-8080 to see if an activity is happening on a Saturday when you want to visit and to make a reservation.
Wonderful permanent collection and frequent visiting exhibitions. Well worth the detour to the Skidmore campus
I visited during the exhibition of their students work and was blown away by the quality shown. The work was very varied and interesting and I must congratulate the students on a job well done.I enjoyed their work as much as, if not more than the works I have seen at some major museums such as the Guggenheim or MoMA - NOT KIDDING!!!!!!I will be returning on my next trip to Saratoga/
The benefactor family for the Yaddo scholarship for women artists. Moving photo exhibit, accessible, knowledgeable staff to answer queries, free tours.
