He is prettu cool..but not easy to find just driving through Bangor as there are so many sections of Bangor...you have to fund the CROSS INURANCE CENTER across from Hollywood Slots. He is well cared for and MAINE needs to give him BLUE...he needs his OX with him!! Come on Maine...find BLUE!!!
The Paul Bunyan Statue is impressive! He personifies the city of Bangor, once the lumber capital of the world. There are othe states that claim him and they can -as Maine grew too small for Paul and he moved out west! He was Bangor born though, that's why he is as great a legend as he is!
Now you may say how could you not notice a statue of this size as we drove into Bangor along Main Street but we did? The Paul Bunyan statue is enormous which makes it even funnier how we missed seeing him! Paul Bunyan represents the Bangor and Maine lumber jack country history going back to the 1700's we believe but coming from the UK we know very little about him and his history ourselves. He stands 31 feet high and towers above you if you stand directly in front of him! We are so glad we managed to find and visit him before we left Bangor. Just got the one photo to share?Thank you for reading this John & Sue Eastbourne UK.
If you`re like me and love to see different and fun stuff while on a trip add this one to your list. Big guy welcoming you to Bangor ME lumber jack country going way back to the 1700's. Nicely kept statue right on the corner, stop and get a picture
Paul Bunyan used to be enshrined in a nice little park in Bangor. I have many fond memories of visiting this park in my youth. In the interest of "economic development," the park was replaced by modern development. Paul is now situated in a postage-stamp-sized oasis in front of a brick building. He doesn't look nearly so tall or formidable as he did in days of old. It makes me sad. You don't even need to go up to the statue--you can view it at eye-level from the parking garage of the casino across the street.
We were searching for the statue when someone informed us that the statue has been moved from the park to across from The Hollywood Casino. Almost 30 feet tall & worth a look. We admired the statue & Paul Bunyan's history. We took many pictures also. It was worth looking for & finding. If in Bangor, you MUST find this statue.
Come on -- is there anything more iconic in Maine than Paul Bunyan? This has been around all my life and has been maintained beautifully.
I work in Bangor and regularly go for walks on my lunch break. The statue might be "just a statue" but I like seeing Paul's smiling face when I walk by on a nice day. If you're in the Bangor area, I would recommend walking/driving by the statue as it is pretty impressive and quite tall! There is now some parking behind the Cross Center that is just a quick walk down a hill away if you'd like to get some close-up pictures. Or, you could visit after going to the casino or lunch across the street at Geaghan's (delicious food with large portions and decent prices).
Loved seeing this statue of Paul standing so tall..The area is nice and clean and right next to casino...where we ate lunch
This is quite literally a statue- there is nothing else there to see. No place to park. But if you're in the area it is certainly worth making a point to drive by it. Yankee Magazine did an "Up Close" piece on it in the September/October 2014 issue. The statue is made of fiberglass, metal, and wood, weighs 3700 pounds and is 31 feet tall. Paul Bunyan is a fun part of Bangor's culture.
It was raining so had to get a side view from the car. In a small park across from the casino . Babe, hi sox was not with him. I guess he picked it up on the way to Minnesota.
Now sitting in front of the Cross Insurance Center. Got a good look at him from the top floor of parking garage at the Casino, did not find it that exciting.
It seems kind of odd having one of these on a busy street in Maine! The statue is pretty cool, great detail.
We thought we were in for something different. There was no place to park or take photos. Quite disappointing.
We thought this statue was in the middle of a park and it would be a great place to stop and run around and grab a photo. But, it is just in front of a building with nowhere to park in sight. We managed to finagle some parking and got a picture, but there was no real green space to run around. Yes, the statue is in good condition, but I would not stop here again.
