The view from Cadillac Mountain is the best in this part of Maine for a birds eye view of the pacific and sunrise. It is a nice area of the park to hike around and save some memories for later via your camera. Worth the drive up the mountain, definitely!
If you don't feel like hiking make the drive to the top. You may find 5 tour buses and 50 cars when you get there, so try to do it an off time.
Awesome! The drive up the mountain is easy. The views are spectacular looking on Bar Harbor and Frenchmans Bay. Make sure you visit before dawn to see the sunrise.
What a great view , nice road , little tip however . When you start out and it is foggy at low elevation , the kids are asking if you are there yet , a few bikes go by and your wife says how cool , turn around and wait . Trust me , i have been on foggy roads in Penn. , Ohio , and many other states . Man , you get a little higher and you cannot see 6 " in front of you , i'am not joking , boys and girls . Give it a little time to clear up , turn around if you dare and wait . All that being said when you do get up there , everyone will love it !!!
If you visit Maine, don't miss the Acadia region, and especially Cadillac Mountain. Even a cloudy or overcast day is beautiful at the top of Cadillac Mountain! Be sure to dress warm- it's windy up there!
We drove to the top of Cadillac Mountain as we didn't have a ton of time. The fact that you can drive to the summit is a plus when you are short on time but it does make for a different experience at the top. The views are incredible and are worth seeing, but with a large parking lot and gift shop, the summit is definitely setup for tourists rather than outdoor enthusiasts.
This is a must see while in Acadia National Park but be advised if you are looking for a nice quiet relaxing view of the sunrise or sunset then Cadillac Mountain is not for you. Maybe you can get that off season but in the summer the place is VERY crowded at both sunset and sunrise. We tried both. You need to be there very early not only to make sure you have a place to park but to try to get a spot where people won't be walking in front of you and your pictures. With that said, the views are amazing and are worth dealing with the crowds.
I went to the mountain top several times. But the best time in my opinion is in the early morning when the sun slowly rises from behind the ocean. The colors change around you and everything looks peaceful. But it is quite crowded at this time of the day. I went there around 5:45 AM in october and towards 6:30 AM there were people everywhere around me and the parking lot was packed. But the view was really spectacular: Bar Harbor is just a small spot at the foot of the mountain, the ocean seems endless, with small islands everywhere around and the fall foliage glows in the rising sun.A sunset in the evening is wonderful, too. But I think at that time of the day the view toward Mount Desert Island is more beautiful, because the sun sets behind the lakes in the west.
the weather was poor as we drove up the mountain, unsure if we were going to stay at the park. we had just paid to get in and didn't have time to visit the next day. it was now or never. we sat in the car watching it downpour for a while. then came lightning and we sought out refuge in the small store. we passed at least an hour or two looking at merchandise with several other people doing the same. the store has food, drinks, books, souvenirs, clothing, etc. they updated us on the weather for the day. finally we decided we didn't care. we wanted to see the view. we bought raincoats/covers for 1.50 each and out we went. sooo worth a bit of rain (it has slowed). it created this awesome fog that looked great in photos. we walked all over the mountain and read all the boards set up that gave info on the mountain. stunning view. I LOVE MAINE
..whether you drive up or hike up.. it is worth the effort. I lucked out and was there at a full moon, the sunset set and the moon came over the horizon. Just fabulous.
Acadia National Park is amazing !!! We did visit it the 1st week of April so it was kind of dead which is not a bad thing. We heard that in peak times (which is the whole summer) it's so busy that they make both lanes a one way loop through the whole park. We were able to stop wherever we wanted for pictures etc. Highly recommend it !!!
Absolutely Breath taking, Still go there in my mind when I meditate. Screen Saver heaven at work, Can't wait to go back.
The road up is nice if you want good views without the hiking, but the trails are incredible. In my time I've done all four. This time, my daughter wanted to do the really steep trail, which was strenuous but worth it!
My wife and I biked along the carriage roads which are wide and smooth with sure pack. One one part a hiking trail crossed the bike path so we set our bikes aside and hiked to the top of a smaller peak. The next day we hiked up Cadillac Mt which took 2 hours. It was not steep as we took the path from the parking lot. The views are breath taking!! We plan to return next September for more biking and hiking!!
My wife and I with her sister/brother in law made the trip up Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park to see the first mainland sunrise for the USA. We had to leave our hotel at 4:30 AM to get to the top of the mountain for the event. We dressed warmly and carried blankets with us as we were sitting on the mountain top in the pre sunrise. What a wonderful sight as the sun appears and warms the mountain top. After taking in the sunrise we return to Bar Harbor for a wonderful breakfast of blue berry pancakes.
