The owner is very friendly and so is the staff. I wanted to go horse back riding for my birthday with my two kids (5 & 8) my sister and her son joined us. The stables were easy to find and when I told them it was my birthday they painted the horse for me. We had the best afternoon. My daughter was thrilled when we told her she was going there for summer camp and my son is really looking forward to next year when he is old enough to go as well. I would recommend this for any family. We loved our trip.
My daughter and I took a 1 hour trail ride which Jeanne led. She gave us interesting info as we went along, was very easy-going, the ride was beautiful and we learned a lot about the island. Price was reasonable too (cash/check only!). I would recommend!
During our family reunion at Peaks Island Maine in August 2013, we decided to take the kids (ages 9 to 11) horseback riding. I contacted Jeanann Alves who owns the camp to set up a ride. She was amazing! Our kids (6 of them) had no experience riding. When we got to the camp she and her staff set up each girl with a horse. The kids loved it because each horse had a story behind it. Most of them were beautiful rescue horses. Each girl had a horse and a staff member that held the leads and we all took a beautiful trail ride along the shore. Thanks to Jeanann and her very friendly staff our kids had an awesome time. If you are looking for an incredible experience to ride a beautiful horse along a shoreline....then this is how you do it!! Thanks Jeanann and we look forward to seeing you in June 2015 for our next reunion!!!
Wow! We just finished a trail ride. It was an amazing experience. The ride was beautiful. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. My daughter was nervous at first, and they made her comfortable and put her mind at ease. She ended up loving it!!!!! We highly recommend this place!
I took my 6 and 8 year old grand daughters to Horse Island Day Camp for a trail ride and it was a very fun experience. The girls had lovely horses guided by friendly and knowledgeable staff. After the trail ride they had an opportunity to groom their horses and spend some time with them. We made a day of this -- traveling on the ferry, walking around the island and having lunch and ice cream. A good day trip for school age kids.
Best experience of my life. The o'toole family could not have been more accommodating. If you are visiting peaks island you are missing out if you don't check it out.
This establishment misrepresented its services for trail rides. My husband and I are experienced riders. When we travel across the U.S., we try to find a stable that offers trail rides for adults. We have had wonderful experiences across the nation, including in Alaska, Hawaii, California, Tennessee, Florida, etc. Since this establishment's website had a heavy focus on children's actives with a small reference to trail rides, we called in advance to in fact verify adult trail rides were offered. We were assured that yes, trail rides were offered at an hourly rate for adults. We were even asked what our experience level was, and I told her we were experienced riders. When we arrived by foot at the end of the dirt road, I thought we were at the wrong place. There were no other customers, and no sign of employees. The only indication it was the right place was a small mailbox on the ground with the establishment's name. Our "trail guide" was late but she was very friendly. We were instructed to wear riding helmets and mount from a concrete mounting block. We were never asked to sign a release waiver, which every other stable we have visited has requested. Our “trail guide” then walked on foot and ran back and forth between the horses my husband and I was on to “hold onto the reins”. I do mean literally that she kept holding onto the halter or the reins of our horses as if we were children riding a pony for the first time. We should have stopped the ride, and I regret not double checking the type of bridals she was using. I learned while we were riding that she decided not to use a bit and that I was on a former barrel racer. At one point, our “trail guide” stopped to talk to some friends driving by and told us to go ahead and go down the road and she would catch up. My husband and I really regretted not ending the ride sooner. We went to the island on a very hot day dressed in riding attire (closed toed shoes, jeans, etc), walked 15 – 20 minutes from the ferry to reach the location, and then experienced the worst “trail ride” we have ever been on in our lives. It was so bad we did not even take any pictures; which I wish now we would have taken so that we could share them here. This establishment advertised that it offered adult trail rides, but in our experience, they misrepresented their services since this is not a true trail ride when someone walks next to you on the ground and holds on to the reins or halter nearly the entire time.
