This quaint little museum is an oddity, and that is what makes it weird. The owner is lovely and she is what makes it wonderful. It is part of Peak's. The owner sometimes plays her accordion our front. It is a celebration of the ordinary.
If you like umbrella covers this is the place to be. One more interesting experience on the island. The owner enjoys sharing stories about the origins of each umbrella cover.
Nancy the driver behind the museum approaches her subject with gusto so that you ride along on her enthusiasm for the umbrella covers, you really want to find examples for her, so do try.She breaks up her guided tour with accordian playing which is worth the visit anyway. She naturally has the Guiness record for umbrella covers.
what you'll find when you travel about. It was our first time on Peaks Island and we loved it. The lady who runs this place is very enthusiastic ... honestly, you have to stop in. Yes, it's weird, but I really liked how happy she is to share her passion for umbrella covers with everyone. She plays her accordion and gets you to sing along... and you just can't rain on her parade because she's so happy herself. :-)
She will charm you with her "guided tour". The finale is her accordion solo. Do go in, unless you're competing to rent a bike or golf cart, in which case do that first. It's one room and a hoot.
Absolutely made my trip. A museum that celebrates the mundane? Uhhh, YES!!The theme song rocked, the accordion playing was on point, and the tour was ridiculously engaging. Nancy is a superstar. A MUST SEE!
The curator was very interesting and fun. She was very proud of the fact that she holds a Guiness record and that the crew from American Idol was in to film the museum during a recent visit to Portland. She did a good job engaging her visitors and provided a small gift for everyone who correctly answered a trivia question. There is no fee but donations are accepted
Always fun to visit fun quirky roadside attractions and this is a one-of-a-kind for sure. Give yourself about 30 minutes, as the proprietress is quite chatty!
This cozy store front on Island Street is probably the world's only Umbrella cover museum. The owner and curator of this museum is unique and entertaining. It is well worth stopping by if you are on Peeks. There is no charge but a donation is requested
The owner now holds a Guiness record for her umbrella collection. You must go in and talk with this lady. She doesn't row with two oars, but she is a gem and well worth your effort to engage her in conservation. It's a MUST on your next trip to Peaks Island !!
If you have the time and have a sense of humor, enjoy the woman's bit of fun. Corny, but still tasteful.
Entertain your sense of fancy and visit. A few minutes with Nancy 3 is worth the trip to Peaks. She is a unique individual; one-of-a-kind Mainer! Her Museum is crazy/nuts!....but that is what you are there to experience. In our more than serious world it helps to entertain yourself with whimsy and imagination. Visit it!
We happened upon this place while we were touring around the island on foot with our kids. The owner/curator was energetic, full of life, wonderful with the kids, and generally entertaining. A terrific few moments we will never forget, truly.
A small room "filled" with umbrella covers. And from what was shown hanging around, there was not alot to see. I've seen more hats hanging up in a bar.Spending extra time riding a bike along the seacoast would be a better use of your time.
This "museum" is just plain fun. The proprietor alone is worth meeting. She plays the accordion, has good stories to share about her umbrella covers, and is full of energy. The Museum doesn't cost anything, and small donations are accepted. This stop will take 5 - 10 minutes and it is located very near the Port exit. Check it out during your Peaks Island visit!
