Ed drove us all around the Maine backcountry and even took us out on an unexpected canoe trip! We saw two moose and were able to take a lot of great pics, and the drive and canoe trip allowed us to see a lot of the beautiful Maine countryside without worrying about watching the road. Ed was also very funny- a safari and comedy tour all in one!
My husband and I went with Ed last year on Moose safari on our way back from motorcycle trip back from Canada. Not being able to take the bike on the back roads it was so great to have Ed give us that opportunity to see moose. We saw 5 Moose last year two male ...two female...and a baby. We just had to do it again... believe me going through NH and Maine is a blessing in itself. We hit some really warm weather and let's face it you can't predict wild animal's Ed was hopping we wouldn't be disappointed! Well when Ed made it a point to take us to our own pond and put on his lucky doo rag....I knew we'd see something! On a beautiful warm sunny day...on a beautiful, peaceful pond out comes from the woods...a nice looking male moose! As I sat in my princess chair in the canoe, warm sunny day and no bugs ... two owls hooting back and forth to each other....I realized how fortunate I was!! Many pictures later we headed back to land seeing two otters playing in the water ... we called it a day. And what a great day it was!!!
Ed is very professional, punctual, courteous, and sensitive to his clients needs. To be fair, some later risers may be taken aback by Ed's early morning energy and enthusiasm, but you can tell he really aims to please. Ed also brings coffee and donuts. How nice is that? :<)Finally, he is prompt to reply to any concerns via text and always follows up to thank you.Would not hesitate to recommend to others.
best day on the River and seen Moose two days in a row. Our photo's are fabulous. The company TwinMaples outdoor did a great job in guiding to the quiet spots to fish and track moose.
Ed was fantastic! So much fun! The weather was constant rain. We still had a great time and we saw one moose. Ed has a great sense of humor and made our trip a memorable one. I will be back again!
We didn't know what to expect as we headed out with Ed in his yellow jeep to a pond about an hour from Greenville. Along the way Ed shared moose stories and other interesting points of conversation making us feel very welcome and excited about the upcoming adventure in search of moose. Ed found a moose and we were able to watch it in the pond for about an hour. We thought our safari was over but Ed took us to two more ponds in search of more moose. We didn't see any additional moose but had some amazing hiking, saw other wildlife including deer and an overall great backwoods Maine experience.
I had a last minute few days off from work, so I asked my 17 year old daughter where she wanted to go within driving distance (we live in central New Jersey). She replied "Maine"... and when I asked her why... "because I want to see a moose!". Okay I started doing my tripadvisor research, found a last minute place to stay (Kineo View Motor Lodge, very nice) and made some calls to see if there was any availability for a private safari tour. Ed responded to my email almost immediately that he did have an opening Friday morning 8/23. Because of my bum shoulder which prevented me from paddling/rowing, we decided on the jeep tour. Ed picked us up promptly at 5:30am and off we went. We were able to see a total of seven moose! Four of them were quite a distance away, across a huge "pond", and we needed to use our binoculars (um, bring binoculars). But the other three were fairly close. In fact, one adolescent female moose (we named her Mabel afterwards lol) was quite curious about us and started walking towards us through the goldenrod (see picture!). When she started to trot towards us, it spooked my daughter who ran towards the jeep for cover. This got the Mabel a bit hesitant and took off in another direction. A few seconds later she shows up in the middle of the gravel road, turns towards us, nods her head and takes off before I could get another picture. That experience was most awesome :) We did see a few other moose but none as interesting as Mabel! Before we headed back we stopped and Ed gave us coffee, water and muffins. We were back at our lodge by 9:30 and still had the whole day ahead of us. Ed was wonderful and full of knowledge. Highly recommended!
I drove my husband crazy wanting to see a moose all through our vacation! We traveled by motorcycle from PA thru New Hampshire to New Brunswick to Nova Scotia, till finally on our way back heading home I booked a moose safari with Ed only staying one night in Guilford Maine. Ed was so nice he picked us up at the Guilford B & B (which by the way was wonderful) when we started our adventure. Ed took us on roads there would be no way we could take our motorcycle, let alone your average car! He offered us snacks and a beverage and even entertained us with his humor on our adventure...we didn't even have to pay extra for that! We went on some old dirt logging roads with his trusty jeep and then ventured on a gorgeous pond (which seemed like a lake to me) in his trust worthy canoe! Ed and my husband rowed while I felt like the princes on her throne, sitting in the little chair Ed brought on the canoe for me to sit. I was so loving this adventure! Need less to say ...we hit the lotto...not only did we see a moose we saw several!!! And boy were they awesome!! It was like the enchanted pond ...amazing beauty all around ...the moose... the scenery...the sunny day...the witty company!! We even topped it off with a stunning sunset view of Moose Head Lake and a rainbow at the end of our adventure! This was definitely my dream come true ...thanks Ed for helping me write my story!!!
What a great day and what a great Guide. We really enjoyed ourselves and saw lots of moose andother wildlife.Course, there is nothing you can do about the bugs but we brought bug spray and our guide had some too.Worked well.Am planning on going again. Can't wait.I would live in Greenville if I could.Just breathtakingly beautiful.Donna
We went out with Ed in the middle of the afternoon and he took us to three different ponds. We canoed in two of them and saw moose in each, for a total of nine. It was an absolutely thrilling afternoon and Ed was a very nice guide. Be sure to take insect repellent (Ed has some if you forget) but what is a million black flies when you can enjoy seeing moose in their own habitat. We felt extremely lucky.
We did a 4 hour moose tour with Ed. He's funny and knowledgeable. We had a great time. I should also mention that he found a large bull moose on a pond. We sat mesmerized, watching it feed for about an hour. On our way back to our campsite we saw a female moose with a white tailed deer. The moose was just fine with our approach till the deer got spooked. We watched as they bolted down a trail, deer following moose. Ed said that's very rare for the 2 species to be so together! LOL. Boy do moose look funny when they run. Thanks for a great time Ed. He also does different kinds of tours - star gazing, birding, canoe and ice caving.P.S. Talk about great customer service - he brought coffee and delicious blueberry muffins.
Unfortunately I can't comment or review the actual moose safari as we had to cancel due to inclement weather - however I can say that Ed provided an excellent level of customer service in the lead up to our planned tour. He was helpful, accommodating and very communicative. When it became apparent that weather might be an issue he pro-actively suggested alternatives to the canoes. We ended up canceling but based on my experience I would have no hesitation in booking with Ed again or recommending Moose Country Safaris.
Moose Country Safaris is run by Ed Mathieu. He will pick you up in his jeep, which is great, since we were staying in Greenville. You can pick different options with canoe or the jeep. We went on a jeep tour after Labor Day. He knows the area well, and will take you to remote places to look for moose. The scenery itself was worth the trip, but we did see a moose close up despite going at a time of year that is not the best.
