One of the many benefits of living on the Maine coast is exploring the shoreline all year long. Whatever the season, scarborough beach is my top pick. Miles of pristine shoreline make for spectacular walks in winter. The surfing is also pretty great too! The beach comes to life in the summer months with locals and visitors alike flocking to experience the sparkling sand, relatively warm water & great surf. In season they have a gourmet concession stand (the best) lifeguards, restrooms & rinse showers. In season I'd advise getting there early as they fill up fast. In the off season, it's the perfect place to enjoy a quiet walk, beautiful views and the sound of the surf.
My husband and I visited here in mid October. Since it is the offseason, it was empty. I think it was $5/adult to get in for non-Maine residents. There is a beautiful pond right next to the parking area. There was probably about a 1/4 to 1/3 mile walk to the beach. It feels like you are walking on country road other than you can hear the waves. The beach was great, not commercialized at all. It had such a peaceful feel and there were so many cool rocks that had washed up on the beach. We really liked it here. The waves were really big too; there were a handful of people surfing. It is really close to Portland. I will be back.
Lots of space, outdoor showers to rinse off, could use more parking. A little pricey if you don't have a town sticker.
Scarborough Beach has all you really need for a relaxed visit to the beach. There is a place to rent unbrellas, chairs and boogie boards, bathrooms, outdoor shower and some minimal food available. Lovely sandy beach great tor wading. Be prepared for a bit of a walk in if crowded.
My family and I have gone to Scarborough Beach State Park a few times and have always had a good experience. Today there was some nice surf and we rented Boogie boards for $6 each. My children are 6 and 9 and the surf wasn't too much for them to handle; however, the wind was pretty strong and made it difficult for our seven-year-old to hang on to his board. The parking is limited, but we've always been able to get a spot, and there are some nice showers to rinse off in after the beach.
Scarborough State Park is a fine beach at the end of Black Point road. It is very spacious and you can pay to park or find a place outside the gate for free.
Love this beach and a great beach to bring families to as there is a lot of beach when the tide is out. There is a red boat-house nearby. Dogs are allowed certain hours of the day. Fabulous sunsets. Take a chair or blanket and just go and enjoy the end of the day. There is no fee during the fall/winter but there is a parking fee during the summer.
