Well, i live in Maine and work in York and have been trying to get over here for weeks since a friend told me about it. I'm no bourbon expert but have a dozen bottles of various types of small batch stuff from Jack Daniels to Balcones, 6/20, New Holland, Baker's, Maker's Mark, Four Roses and a few others.Really loved this place, but hard to get into as it is only open now Fri-Sun. couldn't reach them by phone during the week despite numerous tries.. Finally went over after work yesterday on a Saturday. The owner is behind the counter and I wish him well. Really love seeing these types of passionate local entrepreneurs. I've been in and around the home brewing and microbrewery scene for decades and I love the enthusiasm. The whiskey? All whiskey tastes OK on its own, that's my humble opinion. This is very expensive and worth it as a novelty or a gift. But for value I was unimpressed. $59.99 for a 750ml bottle, 29.99 for a 375. I bought 4 bottles as gifts.Got home and pulled it out with a handful of my other small batch bourbons for comparison - Bakers, New Holland Beer Barrel Bourbon, Maker's 46. The Bakers is top notch rich and complex. The New Holland was very good. The WIggley Bridge will probably be used for mixing with coke. It was not a great bourbon. I'd say it was fair. Flat, not very complex, not very rich, had some aromas like phenol or vinyl. I drank it neat. Maybe on ice it would mellow. Now I do not consider myself an expert and I think this is worthwhile enough that everyone should go try it and form your own conclusion. Maybe I'm totally wrong about it - i would encourage you to visit try it and form your own opinion. But bottom line....even if it is terrific and even though I want to support local artisans, this is overpriced.YOu can go on any of a number of websites and find recommendations for great small batch bourbons from $18 (Four Roses) to $250+ (Pappy Van WInkle). But many superb small batch bourbons come in way below this - I have Bakers, Booker, small batch Jack Daniels, Balcones BLue Corn, Makers Mark 46, 6/20 from South Carolina, Four Roses, New Holland Beer Barrel Bourbon from Michigan....and even with shipping from far away places none of them were more than $50. (the Bakers was a gift....so I'm not sure how much that was.). Point being, for a novelty and local artisan I recommend you support these guys. For great bourbon, or for a great value....not so much. I think it needs to be improved to be even close to being worth that price. That's really my major criticism. Everyone should form their own opinion about the product.
I never would have expected to find a bourbon distillery in York Beach, Maine! We vacation in York Beach each year and this was a real treat. The gentleman that was working at the counter when we walked through was very knowledgeable and gave us a great tasting. The whiskies were different, to be sure, but good nonetheless. We bought two bottles to bring home and enjoy them very much. The "White Bourbon" was particularly interesting. Never had anything like it!
If you enjoy whiskey I would recommend trying this place. Great whiskey and great service! The staff were extremely friendly and very generous with their samples. Overall, it was a wonderful experience.
After a long winter of anticipation I stopped in to see the new gem in the Center at short sands. Get a taste of the excellent spirits @ Wiggly Bridge. The rums are full and flavorful in the tradition of old new England style rums. These aren't mass marketed quaffs. The whiskeys especially the white whiskey is delicious. Although mjxable they r appreciated more with a single cube or drop of water. The knowledgeable staff will also steer you into some classic cocktails to incorporate their spirits. Craft Spirits are pricey but reflect the quality of the ingredients and the attention to detail that craft, local products represent. Enjoy the tastings and pick up some of their products to enjoy @ home or to give as a special gift for the craft enthusiast!
