I had been there in 2008 and wanted to take my friends there again this time! Its such a lovely place to be, not just for its architecture, but also for the views it offers!
To learn of the story of the captain/ merchant, his family, his life and the architecture that went into this facinating structure is wonderful. Plus what a lovely perch to see Portland and Casco Bay.
We went outside, took some pictures, and left. It was nice even though it was closed. Straight across from it was a wonderful view of the ocean. Definitely charming view better to visit in summer.
A surprise in Portland, wonderful , Spectacular but I don't want to spoil it .Come see it and support the City of Portland. You won't regret it..
I really wasn't sure about this -- wasn't sure it was going to be worth the money and time. I'm so glad I went ahead. The tour and the story of the observatory were so interesting, complemented by interesting information about the history of Portland. Just go for it.
It seems like such a small request, but once you reach the top of the Observatory, you will not be disappointed by the view. Portland is a small city, but the surround is magnificent. Those who traipse up the stairs will be captivated by the view on a clear day and, on a cloudy day, the layers of the cloud cover will make you want to come back another day to see what lies beyond.
It is a bit of a walk and a gentle climb from the harbour area to get to the Observatory but the views from the top are spectacular. It is also worth visiting for it's history (I won't go into it because the tour guide was so entertaining, knowledgeable and friendly that it would spoil it). A must see during a visit to Portland
You just need 30 minutes for this attraction. It's all on foot, so definitely not recommended if you cannot make it to the top. Pretty expensive for a short narrative, but certainly very informative. I would recommend on a sunny, clear day.
This structure was so interesting. We had a tour by an amazing gentlemen. Unfortunately, I didn't get his name, but at the end after giving us an amazing amount of information about how the observatory was designed and built and its use, he mentioned he was 89 years old. (This was after he led us us 5 flights of stairs to the top!). I had never heard about having an observatory to watch for ships that were 20 miles out to sea, so this was a unique experience. The building is right near other attractions so you don't have to go out of your way to see this building.
We spent half a day in Portland and decided to visit the ObservatoryOne cannot go to the top of the tower without guides and they usually start a new tour when they have several customers but it was not a very busy day and we had a guide for the 2 of us only. Our guide was a local and she knew a lot about the area. As we were making our way up to the top of the tower, she told us about the history of the tower, its construction, the city, the harbor and a few anecdotes. We had questions about about the region, transports, the geography of the city and she was able to answer everything. The entrance fee was $9 for a 30 min tour. There are a lot of stairs and no elevators so it is NOT recommended for people with disabilities.
