We stumbled upon the Johnson Hall Museum on our way through Wells/Kennebunk, and weren't we lucky. There is really no way to describe the vast collection of items in this amazing museum. To meet Mr. Johnson himself is enough of a delight. I can't imagine the reviewer who said that he was unfriendly. Quite the opposite. He was so wonderful that we came back the next day! He even showed us his favorite music box and sang along with it. Mr. Johnson has moved many homes to his property, so do not forget to wander around and look into all of these gems. There is an old filling station, a one room schoolhouse, a sleeping cabin, a shop....it goes on and on. He has been visited and featured by American Pickers, so his museum may now be more of a destination, but we literally found it by chance. Do not pass it by.
I almost did not want to write a review because this is the place that is best appreciated if you just happen to stumble on it just as we did. You drive along Route 1 and out of the corner of your eye you catch an old grand building and curious tall columns in the driveway and something else catches your eye so that you must pull in and investigate. You are greeted by an old guy with the long grey hair in a pony tail and for $5 dollars he offers to take you inside the house on a tour. It is amazing the treasures that he collected over time but most of all, the stories that go with the treasures. He might seem as grumpy but if he senses your genuine curiosity, you will be rewarded with the stories of the Franklin Roosevelt stopping in for a meal when his building was a restaurant and he'll turn on the old piano or music box and serenade you with the old songs. And he has a beautiful voice, too. Before you know it, you spent one of the best hours of your trip in the house. You won't forget the treasures you saw and the stories he shared, and most of all, the host himself. If you happen to be in the vicinity of Johnson Hall Museum, stop for a visit. I would definitely recommend it.
I totally don't agree with the reviewer who wrote Johnson Hall Museum was not a friendly place. I don't know who else you saw there, but when we visited, the owner of the place, Dr. Johnson, was alone, and we enjoyed every moment we spent in this one-of-a-kind place. He told us stories about two beautiful Tiffany lamps, his several player pianos (and turned one of them on), his latest purchase, an old model of a WWI ship - basically, about each thing we pointed out. Our two boys didn't want to go inside, so Mr. Johnson let them play soccer on his property which made them very happy. If we had more time, we'd spend hours there. And this visit was worth way more than $5 donation for care for the property. Go and see Yelp reviews, there're quite a few of them, and each single one gave this place 5 stars out of 5.
