The house is even more of a destination now than ever as its grandeaur rises in gracious white and black shutters contrasted from the drab concrete and tacky hand drawn advertising signs of the middle-lower class world all around it. The place grasps it's former stateliness tightly and still retains a sense of history and charm from it's lovely lawn to the out buildings. It's worth a visit to this nicely preserved gem and holds a significant place in RI history, and the Cranston Print Works that it borders.
Good location for private parties, but prices are up drastically, but the facility hasn't been upgraded recently..
I went there on my way to Providence and found that this SO CALLED GAR Civil War is nothing. There is no such thing. Big hoopla about it on the internet with all sort of information. What a bunch of crock. No one answered the door when I rang the front bell at the house. All I saw was a falling down barn!DO NOT GO HERE if you are looking for the GAR Civil War Museum. It is a fraud. Maybe they had HIGH HOPES well they should take down the web page. Disapointed.
Great place to visit. Very Historical. Only problem for me, is the place stinks. Should be less smelly. We went to a function there last year and couldn't eat. Oh well just my opinion. Was much better several years ago.
This house is one of the few Civil War sites directly related to Govenor Sprague, Lincoln's War Governor of Rhode Island. Many people do not know that is was the financing of the A&W Sprague Textile Manufactures and Finishes that supplied the volunteers of the Rhode Island Regiment. The tour guides at the Mansion are pleasant.
One of the most surprising parts of the tour of the Sprague property is the carriage house. It is larger than is appears from the outside and inside the brick building is a collection of transportation methods from the days of the horse and buggy. It was great. The mansion is interesting. Bad thing is that there are no set hours and we were luck to find someone in that day to give us a tour. We were told we usually need an appointment. This is a bad thing because we were only in the area for this one day. They should have set visiting hours. The house is haunted.
