The view from the top of the hill goes on for miles... Fantastic views of both of the sides of the bay----especially great views of Newport. Perfect for a picnic Great for diving --- don't forget a camera. This is a wonderful place to walk around in the Summer, Spring and Fall and if we are fortunate ---even some winter days
Cannot beat the views from the surrounding trails but forget about looking at the Fort itself. Local teens have trashed it, covered with broken bottles, graffiti, etc. It's an embarrassment.
The Jamestown treasure for sure..A beauty .a treasure... You have to walk it... Picnic it .... Visit , explore experience .... Some super history and views and geology...A lot of parking available too...
Fort Wetherill is a fantastic dive site. The park is clean and has easy access to the water. On site bathrooms make pre and post dive easy and the benches make gear set up easy.
Fort Wetherill is an old military coastal installation on Jamestown Island, Rhode Island. The fort part is just loaded with gratify but for some reason its actually appealing (to me anyway). The views of the coast are beautiful you can see sail boat commingl out of or returning to Newport. Also the cliffs have ribbons of quarts going down to the water which add to the beauty of the cliffs. There is also a spot were people scuba dive and they can put kayaks into the water. The park is also PET friendly.
Views aplenty from this seacoast fortification. Terrible graphitti ruins the walls of this once dominant structure. Good place to explore what WW1 felt like. Great views down to the water if you're willing to take a side path down the jagged cliffs. I pack a cooler and eat lunch on the picnic tables during the spring/fall.
Parking is good. We walked over to the Old Cement structures, the graffiti is simply amazing- I know most people say it is horrible and people should not do it, which I agree with, truth be told nobody has been monitoring at night to prevent it, for many years... Although it takes away from the history of the Fort, it really is overwhelming and you cannot help but study it. I liked how the stairs and other areas were open to roam. I found this place interesting and plan to return. I did Google this place as I thought the tunnels were creepy, many people say this place is definitely haunted. I can see where they would get that. My only issue was the port a potty was rancid- It took all of my being to go into it, if it was legal for me to squat in the woods, I would have preferred that!
Apparently we did not go to the right area of the fort to see many of the amazing views. It was also freezing cold in the 40s with wind and even with winter gear on we didn't stay as long to find the nice spots. We did tour the fort itself and it is disappointing to see something that's part of our history be trashed and marked the way that it is. No one takes care of it. Ironic to see Fort Adams so kept nicely and Fort Wetherill left to ruin (I know it cost money...). Neat to walk around but I'm not sure if I'd take my child very far. Footing isn't the bed in some places, lots of broken glass, and who knows who/what is living in some of those tunnels. A little creepy in spots.
On Jamestown I think this view from Fort wetherill is almost as beautiful as the one from Beavertail. They have lots of benches scattered around to enjoy this majestic place. There is a great view of Castle Hill from here to that is very photo worthy. In fact ,some of my best sailboat photos have been taken from here. Don,t miss it.
These are the remnants of the forts that were built to protect the upper bay during the war. They are located along the water in a state park and have some beautiful views from the top of them. Most are sealed up now but there's a great deal of history that went with them. Makes for an interesting day exploring.
The views were spectacular and the crowd was minimal. The Fort area itself has lots of scenic vistas throughout as the land rises far above the ocean with steep rocky cliffs that have been known to have a few crazy kids dive off of although it's posted that no diving is allowed. The beaches are rocky as well - but some people seem to enjoy that. The waves are minimal and the area is well known for scuba diving. The grounds are clean and well kept - with a large picnic areas, and lots of paths and fort structures to explore. We're fortunate to have such a nice waterfront park. I especially like the park benches the've installed along the top of the point. Great way to spend a sunny afternoon just watching the ships go by.
One of the most beautiful spots in RI. While it requires a short hike over a hill from a parking lot, there's a great place to put down a blanket, have a picnic lunch, and enjoy a breathtaking view of Newport harbor.
We went here based upon the recommendation of our B&B owner. It was beautiful!!!! It took us a little while to find the bluffs. (We had to go to the area marked for divers which is to the left.) The views were magnificent. It was a little scary for me, but my 15 year son had no fears on the heights. I could have stayed there all afternoon. If you go to Rhode Island, this place is a must!
it's free , the views are beautiful, the picnic area is very pretty, the fishing area is great. There is a place for scuba.the fort is an interesting place to take a short hike. The kids love the adventure of hiking thru an old fort. There are passages to explore and adventures for them. The bay is an easy view from the top and the fidhing area. Well worth seeing.
One of the best parks in the area. Usually much quieter than other local attractions, with some great hidden corners and gorgeous views of the bay. Significant fortifications have obviously seen some better days, but they have their own unique charm and are pretty cool to explore. Lots of little trails to hike and enjoy.
