Very pleasant location for a walk in the woods, down by the Salt Marsh. We have been going here for years. This is a wild life sanctuary, so no dogs, bicycles, food, etc. There are no facilities - no restrooms.Autumn and early winter are great times to visit- no bugs.
Audubon Society of Rhode Island's refuges are always wonderful.
I have been coming to the Emile Ruecker Refuge for a while and love the park. It's a very easy trail with no extenuating paths, beautiful views of the Sakonet River and some nice places to sit down and enjoy the views while having a snack. Great do go with the kids or if you don't have much time but still want to get out for a little bit. The trails are well market and this is a place that regardless of the season is beautiful. If you are in the are or reside around it's one worth taking the time to visit. Afterwards go to Tiverton Four Corner to have an ice cream at Gray's.The trails can be done within an hour or so. I go to take pictures so I usually spend 4-5 hours there.
I've been coming to this Audubon refuge for years. I like to come a couple of times per season as each has it's own special attraction. My favorite time is autumn. There are a few large maple trees at the junction of the Red and Yellow trails that turn the such a bright yellow that they light up the woods. In summer, I like to come late in the afternoon when the setting sun lights up the tree fringed marshes in such a way that you might consider taking up landscape painting. Only a 50 acre site, you can easily cover all of the trails in a couple of hours if pressed for time. The well marked and relatively flat trails are perfect for those with little ones in tow. This is a truly special place where you can walk through a hardwood forest, meadow and salt-marsh in a matter of minutes but you really should take your time and soak it all in.
If you are in the area, this small refuge is worth exploring. The trails are very easy to walk, mostly all flat terrain and there is a lot of signage to direct you to the various different trails. It will take less than an hour to hike all the trails. There is a nice trail that takes you along a marshy waterway where you will see egrets, gulls, ducks and cormorants feeding in the shallows. The white trail is very short, but at the end is a bird blind to spy on wildlife in a quiet little pond. We were lucky enough to see a mother mallard parading around with her 7 precious little ducklings.Be sure to grab your bug spray for the refuge. Pack your camp chairs and a lunch as well. Take a right out of the parking lot and drive a second down the road to a dirt parking area and have lunch with a nice ocean view.
