island free library

while visiting the library my husband came across books for sale and found me a copy of a 1965 James Beard cookbook for a dollar! funny how different we ate back then..

The Island Free Library is a gem! They have been awarded the "Five Star" award for libraries for five years running....nearly unheard of.The library staff is welcoming and helpful. The library itself is at once calm and vibrant, offering everything a library ought to offer in a welcoming and comfortable environment.The library is divided into three floors and a front garden/yard.The main level houses the circulation desk, new materials, historical materials, a children's room, a toddler room, the adult reading and periodical room, a room for rental DVD's, CD's and MP3 Audio books, a young adult reading/computer room and a homework room.The lower level is comprised of the classic collection room, the book sale room and three flexible rooms that have different summer and winter uses. In the winter they hold yoga, nia and aerobics classes, lectures , meetings, book clubs and knitting group as well as many children's activities in these rooms. The staff very often shows movies here mid day for senior citizens and in the afternoons for children.The upper level is a large beautiful room filled with antiques and books. This is the quietest area of the library and it houses the reference books, adult computers, non-fiction, Audio books and non-fiction DVD's.The library is air conditioned in the summer (air conditioning is very uncommon on Block Island) and well heated in the winter. As another reviewer noted, there are birds and a large fish tank on the entry level.Overall, this is a great library year round. There is always something going on here. In the winter, it is the heart of the island.

I love this library! I visited frequently this summer to peruse books, newspapers, DVDs, the sale racks, and to use the computers and Wi-Fi. They have something for everyone! For a small library, they are very up-to-date. There are different activities offered for all age groups and interests, and on rainy days they offer movies for the youngsters. The librarians are very helpful, the facility is clean and inviting. Stop in if you're on the island at all!

No trip to Block Island should be complete without a visit to the Island Free Library, especially if you hold a RI library card.They have a great selection of DVD's, books, audio books and magazines to keep you busy on the beach or in your rental home.We checked out a puzzle on our last visit and spent hours on a rainy day assembling it.In the fall they loan out apple picking baskets! We didn't check one out, but thought it was ingenious. The staff is friendly, the library beautiful and clean and air conditioned! (Not common on island).They have lots of events for kids, a fantastic book sale in the basement ($1.00 a book), snacks for sale, fish and birds to entertain.They also are the only place on island with decent internet service. You won't think it's all that decent if you are used to better on the "mainland", but it fast for BI.
