This is a must for families. The exhibits are updated pretty regularly and there is always a seasonal theme that allows access to the animals (if you prepay ahead of time and sign a waiver). Our last trip included feeding the giraffes by hand and having the seals perform tricks for us as we fed them fish. The red panda exhibit is our favorite (they are crazy little buggers who are adorable) although we do wish they would include an otter exhibit from time to time.During the summer there are always some special events, and of course during winter there is the Jack-o-Lattern pathway that is a must see if you are visiting, or are a resident, of RI during the winter months. The price tags are always good (never more than $15 for a special event) and you can spend the day listening to the trainers teach about their animals or going to event to event with your kids for fun. Highly recommend at least once a year.
Wonderful place and a beautiful park setting. Best zoo in New England. Don't miss the buterrfly event in the spring and the pumpkins event in the fall.
I have been to may parks, Roger Williams has such a great variety of animals and things to do it is a must visit when in Rhode Island.
Great place for the whole family no matter what your age. If you love animals you will love this zoo, Clean, well kept and all the animals are easy to view. Very informative. The grounds are park like. I would say this is a great way to spend the day, I went with my older children (young adults) and we really enjoyed it.
If you are in Providence around Halloween, plan to tour the park at night when over 1,000 pumpkins come to life. The area is divided into themes for displaying the most amazing carved and painted pumpkins. Bundle up and enjoy the exhibition!
if you have never been to the Zoo in the fall when they do the Pumpkin extravanganza you have to go, take the family, it is truly unbelievable.
The Roger Williams Park Zoo is a medium sized zoo in Providence, RI. The zoo is set up well, so that strolling through it at a leisurely pace will allow you to see all the animals and exhibits in about three hours. Some of the highlights were the elephants, giraffes and snow leopards. We were also there during Halloween time and there were plenty of jack o' lanterns to see during this time.
Literally had thousands of real pumpkins carved and lit as jack-o-lanterns. A true fall season spectacular in New England. We returned the next weekend, because we couldn't get enough on first visit. A tip to beat the crowds... Weekends are very busy. If you purchase a ticket with dinner, it adds a nominal cost, and allows you to go around entire line directly into zoo. On the first visit (opening night) they were sold out. I went to front and asked an employee about adding dinner-He walked us past everyone that had been waiting in line over an hour, and we were in park within moments. Great way to get family in the spirit of the season!!!
The Roger Williams Pumpkin Spectacular is an amazing event for all ages to see! There are 20,000 different carved pumpkins for the month of October - November. Each section is themed with a specific type of carvings and music is playing in the background. There are many people if you go on a busy night, and it can be hard to see where you are walking! I suggest bringing a flashlight to find each other. Next year, defiantly go.
I have been to the Roger Williams Park Zoo daytime and nighttime. Daytime we go there and we can see a lot of animals which some of them are cute and pretty. The elephants in the zoo are lovely, they grab their food with their long nose and you can even see how they poo. And the nighttime in October is wonderful and brilliant, we go there at around 7 and the scene is totally different from the morning. Instead of animals, you would see thousands of pumpkin light in the zoo and they are excellent work. I don't know how people carve on those pumpkin. MUST GO!
Large zoo with lots of different animals. Has Elephants, Giraffes and other African animals. Seemed to have good amenities open even in the winter.
I only stayed in Providence for a day and I still think seeing this zoo was definitely worthwhile. It is a big zoo, but far from the biggest one I have seen. I saw many families with young children and they all seemed to be having a great time as well. I loved seeing the giraffes, they were so close!
Buy tickets in advance. Buy tickets in advance. One more time...If you can, find a Groupon. Great value! Lines are long so be prepared to wait quite a bit to actually hit the exhibit itself. But gosh it's something to see! So cool. Would go again. Everyone in our group from 45 to 5 loved it.
The Roger Williams Zoo has come a long way in the past thirty years. it is highly regarded for its animal habitats, it's science programs and it's exhibitions to name just a few. The fall's highlight was the annual pumpkin display an artistic expression of all designs and themes pumpkin. It was fabulous. The only down side which jumps out is the lack of handicapped access in the park surrounding the zoo.
A terrific place for everyone to visit. There are great activities for young children and handicapped access sites as well. Playgrounds and animals and in the summer a water spouting play area.
