The International Tennis Hall of Fame is undergoing a major renovation now, with the re-opening expected in May 2015. If you're in Newport before then and are a tennis fan, it's worth a quick visit as it is FREE until the grand re-opening. The only part of the facility that is currently open is the gallery of Hall of Famers. The presentation of the legends from Tilden to Kramer to Laver to Borg to McEnroe is interesting but is very 1990s-esque. My guess is the new, improved ITHOF will be a much better experience--if not free.
Tennis buffs will like the beautiful grass courts. Lots to see when the renovations are completed. Tributes to many famous players will be included as well as history of game.
I must visit destination if you consider yourself a fan of tennis. There's no better place to absorb the history of the sport than here. You can pay to play on the grass courts, it's so cool and well worth the money.
well yes i played quite a bit when younger so I did enjoy this place, but i'd say you really need to be a tennis fan to appreciate it. If you're older, you get to take a walk back in history and be reminded of all the great players you used to know. Very impressive layout of displays, artifacts, and videos and it is much larger inside than you expect.
Traveling back from your visit to the mansions stop in at this interesting and historic restaurant. Parking is right across the street and is free. The food was very well prepared.
Allow plenty of time for your visit here, there is so much to see. Everything is beautifully displayed with informative explanatory boards. We particularly enjoyed the various outfits; the Teddy Tinling designs, the tiny dress worn by 15 year old Tracey Austin and Gussie Moran's scandalous frilly knickers! The order of some of the displays was a little puzzling, with the time line interrupted by a display on current hall of fame inductees but this did not detract from our enjoyment. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Great take for a trip to Newport. It is large museum, with lots of exhibits. We took the guided tour, and she was excellent. The history of tennis in one place. The grass courts and grounds were nice even though it was off season. Any sports fan would enjoy. I would go again and spend more time with the exhibits as we had a busy day planned. You will enjoy it.
This museum is very well-designed whether you are a tennis player or not. The audio tour is full of easy to follow info and stories. The exhibits are wonderful.
Tennis fans will appreciate seeing the grass courts where the US Open originated. You can play for $120 an hour. We passed. Lots of trophies, pictures, videos and mementoes from stars like tennis shoes worn by Roger Federer or Chris Everett.
A lovely and well preserved little museum, a good way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy day. Walking round and reminding ourselves of tennis stars of the past.
I am not into tennis, but someone in our party is a big tennis player, so we all went to the tennis Hall of Fame. It is huge. There are many many displays and videos of tennis players of yesteryear! I enjoyed seeing the old film footage. It is a self guided tour and you can look at the small screens at your own pace. It was interesting even for someone like me who doesn't follow tennis, so if you love tennis, you'll love this.
I had no idea this International Hall of Fame was located in Newport. My daughter's play tennis and we love to watch and attend the US Open as well. It was such a throwback to the early days of lawn tennis! Beautiful grounds and Great information and the shop had great souvenirs for my kids! It is right in the heart of town - you would never know what was behind the front entrance until you went through.
The International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum was an added plus to our great trip to Newport, Rhode Island. From the street, it doesn't look that large, but as we entered a small walkway, we were, pleasantly, surprised to see how large it was and to see the grass tennis courts. There's a nice store on the premises with the museum above it. I believe the museum was $8 per person. Across the grass tennis courts, there was a nice restaurant and a gift shop. if you like Tennis, this should be a must see on your trip. We saw it after touring The Mansions in Newport, RI.
We enjoyed a quick trip through the museum on a rainy day so we did not go on the grass courts but enjoyed the history and the objects in the museum.
If you are a fan of Tennis, this is a must-see. Covering the roots and origins from Victorian times to the modern game.
