Located near the historic Boone Tavern on the edge of the Berea College campus, this is a lovely place to see and purchase handcrafted items made by students. We purchased several items as gifts, and were very happy with our selections, and pleased to support the students’ efforts.
It's hard not to give a student-run store a higher mark, but this college craft/bookstore is a typical demo/sales environment. I took the time to chat with the students who were creating jewelry and weaving and that made the stop worthwhile. Prices are high, but represent lots of hours of work. And, these students pay their way through college with their efforts. OK, 5 stars in my heart, but not in reality. :)
Berea College offers free education for lower-income students. Everyone accepted to the college must work on campus. Many work in the crafts program, learning woodworking, weaving, ceramics for lifelong skills if they choose to be crafts people and artists. The crafts are of the highest quality and make beautiful gifts and items for home while supporting this fabulous college.
We stopped here 2x. We were able to visit with a student who explained how the college works. She was helpful and we bought a student made item. We stopped back later in the day. We were asked if we had taken a tour. Since our tour did not include the weaving area, a young lady took us to the loom and showed us how it worked. The gallery is in the process of being remodeled so it was in a smaller area in the meantime.
Nice place to stop in, see some classic hand made crafts, learn from student workers about the college, the tradition and process of making the items, and a nice place to pick up some unique gifts for someone special . . . or yourself . . . because you are special and you deserve it!
Thank you so much for your timely and polite review! We take your opinion to heart and it means a great deal to all of us students. Enjoy the rest of your travels!
Nice little shop, good for watching a student demo or two. We saw students making brooms and jewelry.
The students who were working on their crafts were very friendly and invited you to watch them and or show you how they were making various things. The quality of the workmanship was excellent.
You can watch a potter or jewelry maker work. The students are friendly and informative. The things they make are well displayed and help support them.
I like the atmosphere here, as well as the way they display the items. Beautiful, clean, bright and neat. The students are very friendly and helpful. The handcrafts are made by talented students.
The students at Berea produce lovely items, and this is the place to visit with the artisans and to purchase their work.
The students here are so friendly and professional. They greet us as we enter the door. They tell us about the college, the store, and the craft program. They have students demonstrate the work in process. The products are very well-made. It is on the college square, so it is very convenient to get around and see other things.Worth a visit.
The students At Berea College are so talented. Unlike most craft shops there is no junk! The crafts are displayed so well and are simply beautiful from the pottery, brooms, wood working, jewerly, knitting etc. Thank you Berea College for continuing this committment to the area. I only wish I had not been flying home. Not enough room to purchase some of the things I wanted. It is great we can now order on-line!
Really liked the crafts and pottery pieces. Staff was very helpful. Brought many pieces hime for Christmas gifts. Really enjoyed the shop.
The quality of the crafts on the square is excellent. Everything is displayed in an organized manner. The service is great and the students are knowledgeable.
