My husband and I went to Turfway Park last Saturday night, and they had a good country band who played between each race. We checked the website and saw that the Rusty Griswold's were scheduled to play on 3/7/2015, so we went again with a group of friends and family. Most of the tables upstairs in the no smoking section were reserved so we found a table in the middle of the floor. We did not hear the band playing, so around 8:30 I asked a band member when they were going to play and was told they were scheduled to start between the 7th and 8th races, so we waited. When we still didn't hear the band, we asked a couple of Turfway staff members and was told the band would start at 9:00. We stayed until 10:00 and never did hear the band. Also, the entire facility is dirty and not well kept. The ladies' rooms are especially filthy. We will not return.
Interesting place. I did not know what it was until we went inside and looked around. No betting for me but I was fascinated with the horse track.
Turfway Park is always a "good day at the races". This year, we went on two different days just after Christmas. Both times we sat in the Homestretch Lounge with a table on the window near the bar and the finish line. Despite reservations, we had to ask to be reseated at the table we had requested when originally making the reservations for the first evening races. As always, the horses were magnificent and it was always easy to place our bets. The bathrooms were clean and the staff was friendly. However, the food was only okay. We ordered appetizers the first evening. The potato wedges were great, but other appetizers (chili fries and nachos) were lacking in taste. Our second day, of course the horses again were stellar. This time, we had bowls of chili instead of appetizers and we ate entrees (meatloaf and a steak). The food was better on the second day, but nothing outstanding. The thing I like most about Turfway besides the actual horse racing is the fact that the horse racing is still the focus, especially the live racing. Other nearby race tracks now have casinos which seem to take priority in terms of seating and space. You can go to Turfway and stand outside at the finish line, or you can sit at a table on a window and watch the horses cross the finish line. Go to Turfway for the races, not the food.
I like Turfway Park -- the place is old and worn down, but the staff if GREAT! Only local horse racing track in the N.KY area -- needs a good cleaning and remodeling. However if you like horse racing it is the only place to go. I call it the dump but like I said it is our dump!
Going to the race track is always fun! You can bet on the ponies and have a good time with friends and family! They have live racing during certain seasons of the year!
They have live racing thru March and simulcast racing year round. Great place to go and relax! No charge for parking or admission. Friday nights offer- live music(music on Saturday too), $1.00 beers, $1.00 hot dogs, and $1.00 bets! Friendly atmosphere. The Home Stretch Restaurant offers great food at a reasonable price or just get something at the many food and beverage stations. Like them on Facebook to get the latest updates
Turfway Park has seen better days, but if you like thoroughbred horse racing and good food, you can still have a wonderful afternoon or evening. The overall decline in the popularity of racing has caused Turfway Park to fall into some disrepair. The track could really use a facelift. But it's still a family friendly place to have a nice time. I would recommend having lunch or dinner in the Homestretch clubhouse. Turfway also hosts local live bands on Friday and Saturday nights.
