We went to visit this place but unfortunately it was closed. The sign board displayed it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. I wish people would have mentioned it in their reviews. Would have spared us 50 miles of drive.
Great place to take your time and walk the trails. If you enjoy peace and quiet while taking in natures beauty, this is the place to go. Enjoy special educational talks that are present from time to time.
Preserved prairie land with rolling hills, ponds, natural habitat, birds and animals including huge frogs. The ruts from the covered wagons are visible on one of the many trails. Reminded us of Little House on the Prairie but made us realize what a difficult time they had traveling through this land. Well worth visiting; the center has lots of information, maps and a small gift shop.
Great nature reserve!! Several hiking trails, a pavilion with restrooms, and a pond. The two best features of this center are 1. The bird blind, and 2. Tim Williams, the onsite director. The bird blind is a small enclosure where people can sit behind a one way glass, enabling them to watch birds, squirrels, etc as they eat from several birdfeeders. The scenery behind the bird viewing is breathtaking, which greatly enhanced our enjoyment. Tim Williams is the reserves director. He was our tour guide today, and was a font of knowledge and enthusiasm. He got right down in the mud in a pond, and used a net to drag the bottom, then was able to identify for the kids all the pond life he'd just retrieved from the water. His excitement and love for his job is infectious; the kids can't wit to return. If you want Tim to give you a tour, you'll need to set up your tour in advance. Otherwise, you are welcome during the posted hours to explore on your own, for a small fee. Well worth the small price to enjoy such a gem of a place :-)
It was a beautiful drive back to park. I enjoyed hiking the blue trail and sat for awhile at the pond and enjoyed the sun, birds, and breeze. I didnt mind paying a fee as it cost money to keep up these parks and I found the experience very relaxing. The bird blind was great as well. Plan to visit again.
If you like to walk in the countryside, this is a great place to do it. They charge a fee, but what is the big deal( $4), you spend more than that to do other things. It's very quiet and a nice change from being in town around all the cars and noise( and you learn a thing or two along the way.)
Overpriced walking trails, you can hike many other places for free. Other than a few bird feeders not much of nature center.
Not much to do, you can only watch birds for so long. Can take a walk but watch out for ticks.
Very serene. Great place to get away from town and be close to nature.
We wandered down the long road past Woodford farms and reserves and finally pulled up to the sanctuary at the top of a beautiful ridge. We had happened to drive past the sign while heading over to grab some Bourbon Balls at Rebecca Ruth's and decided to head back and check it out.It was the highlight of the day. We talked to Tim the ranger out there and he showed us some interesting things around the wildlife center which is whole heartedly dedicated to education and children. He told us about the trails and we decided to give the bird blind I look. We sat for a good 30 minutes identifying birds and watching the other small animals eating. It should be noted that we're not birders by any means, in fact I have a deep seated belief that they're all out to kill us. After enjoying the bird blind we headed back to the Center where we sat on the front porch where we talked to Tim and his understudy well past closing time. Just as we left he took us out to share a local KY coffee tree in bloom and a quick look for an Oriole he , may or may not, had heard fluttering in a nearby tree.
This wildlife sanctuary is near famous horse farms and the Bourbon Trail of Lexington and Frankfort, KY. Although off the major highway, the route was well marked with Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary. Only when we arrived did we discover it was an Audobon Center. Near the sanctuary's entrance was an easily accessible bird blind with a good assortment of local birds. We missed the pilliated woodpecker that been there that morning. The friendly naturalist fed the birds while we watched and spent lots of time acquainting us with the birds, the local area and the trails on site. We appreciated the natural contrast of the sanctuary to the millionaire horse farms and racing sites we had been visiting for the weekend.
Apesar de pequeno é um parque muito bonito, onde vimos uma cobra matando uma ave de rapina, fotografamos a façanha. Na última visita estava com um problema com um inseto, o besouro vermelho.
