This was once the equivalent of Hazard's Central Park. It had a swimming/diving pool, croquet courts, and picnic areas. The main building now serves as a dedicated museum to remind us of what we lose when our world becomes hectic, crowded and impersonal. If you are from out of town and want to learn some of the area's history, visit here before you leave. Although it is in walking distance of the downtown intersections, it is a bit hard to get to, since Hazard's streets do not fit a rectangular grid.If you are a Hazard local and have never visited this museum, you owe it to yourself and your community to drop by. People drive many miles to have a picturesque location for a wedding, and here is one in your home town.
Small, but the staff is friendly and the grounds are very pretty and great for photographs. We've stopped by here numerous times to take family photos.
This museum has some of the most lovely, quaint little pieces saved from Hazard in the olden days. Some of it is interactive, there's a dinner bell you can ring, and some old timey quilt that is begging to have its soft-like-grandma's-knitting texture adored by your fingers. I found the exhibit that chronicled phone usage timelines of particular interest. This is a place you can take your kids when they no longer have the luxury of being exposed to a rotary phone! What really sets this museum apart is the hospitality of the curator; her attentive sweetness and impressive knowledge seems reminiscent of the olden days in and of itself. She answered all of the questions from my group of 5 with the utmost of ease. She even maneuvered the conversation to better tailor its topics to what seemed of particular interest to the whims of my party.
