Got a chance to tour the Settlement School with Mr. Corbett Mullins the director of the Appalachian Artisan Studio and loved every bit of it!!! My group and I got to a chance to meet Michael Flynn who showed us all the wonderful projects that they have gotten up to in past semesters. We were able to see their photography, woodworking, blacksmithing and basket weaving projects...such impressive handiwork! If you are ever in town, you should visit the Hindman Settlement School. It has wonderful history too!
Here we met with a staff member on a trip to Hindmen who explained to us that this site was established in 1902 as the first nondenominational rural settlement school in America. The Hindan Settlement management team conveyed to me that this site operates to provide educational and service opportunities for the people of the mountains, while keeping them mindful of their heritage. They also stated that this place takes pride in welcoming community organizations into their settlement schools to hold meetings and little gatherings. There are also many events that they host that focus on offering tours and workshops on Appalachian culture. They usually have a writers workshop by Appalachian Artisans, and a Appalachian Family Folk week where individuals pay for housing at one of the dormitories for a week, attend Kentucky Craftsmen workshops to learn hand-made craft, and enjoy live music, exhibits, and much more. There is also a nature trail adjacent to this settlement school that is great for a great walk to see the beauty that nature has to offer.
Swing by Hindman in Knott County, Ky. and check out this historical gem! It's rich in cultural significance, as well as one of the crown jewels of this fantastic community.
