There's very little to see and, unless you play golf, very little to do here. The guy who works in the gift shop is very knowledgeable and great fun to talk to.
When I visited the park on a Monday, the gift shop was closed which meant that I could not tour any of the buildings. However, I don't feel like I missed much by only touring the grounds. The plaques outside the buildings are very informative about the site, but do not convey whether the buildings are originals or replicas meant to represent the Lincoln family buildings.
There is a definite sense of history there especially in front of the fireplace where A Lincoln's father proposed to Nancy Hanks.
We learned a lot about Lincoln that we did not know. the old buildings were very interesting and the information about each was nice to laern about. However we were disappointed because we did not get to go inside the buildings
Everytime we have new people visit we take them out to go through the buildings and to read the plaques . Several times over my lifetime they have had a reenactment of Abe's parents marriage. I think KET may have a film set out there.
hard to find location but worth the effort. need better advertising for this park. it is well worth the visit and it is nice to see how people lived in that era. affordible family trip
I visited Lincoln's birthplace and the Knob Creek farm in Larue County, KY, then headed east to Washington County, KY and the Lincoln Homestead State Park, located north of the county seat of Springfield, KY. I arrived after 5 PM when the museum was already closed, but I could still visit the historical sights and read the historical markers. The first stop was Mordecai Lincoln's home. This was where Abraham Lincoln's Uncle Mordecai lived. Nearby was the home of Lincoln's grandmother, the widow of Lincoln's grandfather, who was also named Abraham Lincoln. He had been killed by the Indians in Jefferson County, KY when Lincoln's father, Thomas, was still a boy. Thomas Lincoln grew up in this part of Washington County, before heading west to Hardin County, around Elizabethtown. He returned here to marry Nancy Hanks. Lincoln had said all that he came to be was due to the intelligence and love that he received from his mother. One can feel her spirit at this site, and there is a memorial in her honor. Abraham Lincoln didn't live in Washington County, KY, but this State Park is an important site in understanding Lincoln's family and his roots.
visitors center was closed but outside plaques were informative
Just nothing to do after looking at the small cabin. This takes a whole 15 minutes at the most.
THIS is where Lincoln was really born! Visit his homestead in Hodgenville, Kentucky.
Simply worth the ride in the countryside to check out. If you like history, you'll enjoy this site.
This park is very small and very few people visit according to the clerk where you buy your tickets. However, the information you can obtain about Lincoln's heritage is great. Remember, Lincoln did not live here in his life--this was his parents home before he was born. This is where his parents got married, etc. Just a nice tribute to the Lincoln's humble beginnings as a family. I probably won't go back, but it was nice to receive the information I did.
In traveling the Lincoln Heritage Trail in Kentucky, I visited the Lincoln Homestead park just a few minutes outside of Springfield. The park was easy and quick to get to from town, and has a really pretty setting with a golf course - I’d love to go back another time and golf on the golf course! The whole setting was really pretty and I was impressed when I first drove up.After being a little confused by the signage telling me to go to the gift shop to get walking tour tickets and then realizing the sign was on the gift shop – I was on my way.I really liked this site… it was surrounded by split-rail fencing and of course the golf course. One of my favorite things about this site was the fact that you can go in the cabins, and walk around! I felt like I could interact with the buildings more than you usually can and after walking around and looking at so many things it was cool to really go inside and get an idea of what it’s actually like in these buildings. There were two log buildings I could go in – one of which was really big with additions out to the rear and even an upstairs I could go up to. It felt a tad bit dangerous up there, but it was fun to go up. They even had a bed upstairs that Nancy Hanks, Lincoln’s mother, slept in and a broadax belonging to the Lincoln family used in splitting logs, maybe the for family’s log homes. Easy to miss, there is a third log building over an awesome covered bridge – sort of underneath one of the golf tee areas. This building is an old blacksmiths shop full of tools and other blacksmith’s items. I really enjoyed this park and would definitely visit it again – but next time I would bring my golf clubs!
