This is a great fishing and recreation lake that is approx. 20 miles long and around 100 feet deep. They have a nice marina with a nice restaurant and gas/pump out and bait. It winds leasurly around twists and bends in the lake over the 20 miles. It has some gorgeous scenery.
I have family in the Paintsville area and I try to make it a point to come to Paintsville Lake as much as I can. I have been to multiple state parks and this park takes the cake. Being from Ohio, I wish that Ohio would take note from Paintsville Lake. The water is crystal clear and deep (up to 100 feet in some areas). The lake is not a big lake but it is very long and surrounded by rock cliffs, with multiple places to jump off of if you are the daring type. It is such a beautiful place to boat and kayak. I have not camped at the campground but from what I can tell it is well maintained. The marina is small and functional with a restaurant and boat rentals. If you get a chance I recommend that you visit the downstream area of the dam/lake. You will find some hiking tails, rock formations, and a picnic area. If you are looking for a relaxing place to go and not be disturbed from the crowds of the more popular lakes and state parks, then Paintsville Lake is where you need to go.
It was recommended by Paintsville KY person to eat at marina. We had lunch at marina restaurant overlooking the lake. Mountain Homeplace very nice to visit. Lake was quiet for a 4th of July week-end, but lots of boats tied up at marina and lots of cars in parking lot. Several familes were having picnics and ground look well kept.
Every year the Mountain Homeplace along with Rockhouse Fire Dept.,puts on a haunted trail for every one to enjoy being scared half to death. From chainsaw wielding nuts to insane clowns there is a fright around every bend. It was awesome.
We've been to this park several times while visting Jenny Wiley. (Dewey Lake @ Jenny Wiley is nice, but not as family friendly) This Park is about 1/2 hour away. The marina is beautiful and has small Pontoons all the way to what look to us to be Yachts. They even have a restaurant where you can eat outside with the lake as your background. We didn't eat there as we were fishing and wanted the traditional fishing food! (Vienna Sausages, Cheese and Crackers!) There are picnic shelters, picnic tables and benches everywhere, so you can sit and relax while looking at the beautiful lake. The well placed trash cans assure nothing is on the ground. It really is so clean! The bathrooms were even clean! The lake itself is simply gorgeous. You can literally see the bottom it's so clear. There was a lot of activity on the lake when we were there. I love seeing people enjoy the outdoors!Living in Eastern Ky, assures a lake within a short driving distance. We are within a 1/2 hour of Greenbo, 45 mins. to Grayson and Yatesville, and an hour to Cave Run, We are within 1 1/2 hours of Dewey Lake and Paintsville Lake. We've frequented all of these, and no doubt about it Paintsville is the prettiest. (Greenbo, being the closest will ALWAYS be our favorite!)
I use to live near the lake and i use to just go riding around the lake to clear my head and it is so peacful and quiet. I have always loved the lil beach area type thing.
