fat man's misery

It's really a fat man's misery to cross this section of the Historic tour. This is the last part of the tour after you come up from the bottomless hole :)

I have no idea how this is listed as an attraction because you can't see it without taking a tour of Mammoth Cave. But it's fun to squeeze through and say you did it. We took the historic tour and passed Fat Man's Misery about 60 percent of the way through the cave.

This 'attraction' is a part of the Historic Tour… It is a short narrow passage on the tour… most people should be able to pass it. I wrote a separate review about the two tours we took under Mammoth Cave.

We encountered this during our historic tour..the rangers are too good..by gods grace we didn't have a problem and don't think anyone did in our group. It was a very nice experience and first of all kind. Any kind of tour is advisable over here..we tried the drips and domes wherein saw the frozen niagra part too.. a beauty on its own..and one of its kind for sure..

I went through the "fat man's misery" part of the cave on the historic tour. It was not a problem for me to fit through, but I could definitely see how some chubs could have a problem fitting through. I recommend any tour at mammoth caves. The tour guides are awesome and know what they're talking about!

In today's PC world it is odd this label is still used. Thing is, it is properly named for some I would guess. The name does describe that section of the cave walk as does Tall Man's Misery. I am not tall but that was even a challenge for me. By-the-way, I hope they never change these descriptive names.

Part of the Historic tour of Mammoth Cave this section of the tour is a tight squeeze. I'm claustrophobic, but had no problem traversing this section. The walls are close together and the ceiling is low, but so long as you stoop, you can walk through it. No belly-crawling required.

There was enough space to fit through … only the morbidly obese would not make it. We are about 70 and had no problem … but we are not much overweight. Rangers describe it well before we took the tour.

Went through on the Historic Tour. I'm 6-2 at 245 lbs. Had no problem. I don't know how big you would have to be, but I'm sure a guide would warn someone that may have a problem. Just a titled path, probably just hype for the tour guide to give the tourists something to look forward to. Not very memorable.

I enjoyed this portion with my son who has Aspergers. We talked about how small it was. My husband had a rough time through this area because of the lack of lighting. He was starting to have problems with his blood sugar and the lack of lights worsened it for him.

I am grateful for Fat Man's Misery for being the ONLY time my vertically-challenged son was GRATEFUL to be short! :pI agree with what was said about big feet, and I would add that you should feel comfortable with inching along bent over at the waist (I'm 5'8" and had to hunch/bend a fair amount), but at least on the Historic Tour, you only go through it once.I also highly recommend reading before you go - http://www.amazon.com/Journey-Bottomless-Pit-Stephen-Mammoth/dp/0670059080 - it made a huge difference in our enjoyment of the trip, and we could appreciate that we got a nice, relatively easy walk and didn't have to slither along and scrape our way through! :)

Our two boys, 8 and 12 loved this part, my husband and I were fine going through but felt bad for heavy-set people, it was a squeeze and some parts of this tour were slick. A lot of steps to climb and glad that I wore shirts I did not mind if they got dirty. Overall, well worth seeing and walking through.

This was part of our tour in mammoth Cave. We had a small walkway to get through this part of the cave, but it was fun and I did not feel claustrophobic at all. Be sure to travel through this on your cave tour.

Don't be fooled by the name :) Plenty of room for people to pass but still fun. We passed through this on the Historic Tour and enjoyed our visit.

My wife had a bit of trouble here because she was carrying the infant in the carrier. I had a bit of trouble because I'm just over 6'. My toddler couldn't understand why everyone was complaining, it was the perfect size for him.Despite it's name and the dire warnings that they give you before your tour starts, this place isn't too tough, and was one of the highlights of the tour.I only hit my head once!
