The staff at Flame Run gave us so much information about the process, the team, and what we were watching. We stayed for close to an hour just watching the masters of their craft create glass art. The gallery is really nice with impressive blown pieces. I will certainly be returning in the future.
Not only is it cool to watch, but the people there are as nice as they come. They really love what they do.
This is a great place to go for visitors, but residents love it too. From special orders for awards and recognitions, to fun and beautiful glass art from the shop, this is THE place to go in Louisville for a good art experience.
Rservation made through common website to make snowmen at Mark Payton's Studio which is adjacent to Flamerun. Reservation desk mistakenly booked us for Flamerun. Staff of Flamerun matter-fact of fact - not their issue. Mark Payton and his staff very apologetic and accomodating. Great experience and product! Be sure to check our Mark Payton's!
On a cold January day, we noticed the door to the glass studio was partially open. I guess those glass ovens get pretty warm, even on a 20 degree day. There is a lot of contemporary glass for sale and you can sit and watch the glass blowers at work. And, it's free. Not a bad way to warm up and spend 20 minutes.
We bought an art package with a local hotel so this was included. My husband and I both made snowmen. I loved the experience and the artist was very informative and friendly. Defenitely going back.
We planned to go here from seeing it on Trip Advisor. Make sure to make an apt if you want to blow glass. It is a great experience! We had Rudy as our tech artist! He was awesome!!!! Can't wait to get our ornament and snowman!! Definitely go here and have fun blowing your own glass
Wandered by after visiting the Louisville Slugger Factory. We were attracted by the glass flames on the outside wall and the glow of the kilns. For no fee we were allowed the watch the owner and his staff create beautiful ornaments. However, the best creation was a blown glass bowl/tray. It took over half an hour of hard work, but the results were amazing. Worth a stop.
I opted for the tour for $5.75. It is self-guided, they give you a piece of paper and you can observe the glass blowing through large windows (and stay cool), wander through the gift shop and go upstairs to watch them creating glass snowmen with kids. I have been to a lot of glass blowing studios, so I was familiar with the process. I thought the tour was overpriced, but I still enjoyed it. Note that my pictures don’t show the young man who was getting the snowman made (I didn’t know him and decided to crop him out to be safe). The glass blower was really working with him and he was helping make the snowman. So if you opt to make a snowman, it is truly interactive, you are part of the process, not just watching. The glassblower was very patient with the young kids. Parking is on the street (overpriced with meters, $1.50 per hour). If you have never seen glass blowing, the tour is very informative. The shop also has lots of unique items.
Nice place to visit to watch glass being blown. No admission fee, but plenty to buy. They also have a glass blowing workshop available.
Saw that you could try the glass blowing for yourself. It was fantastic! Blew my own glass ornament with the help of one of the glass blowers who handled the technical part! Great experience, fun and they ship for a reasonable price (you have to let it cool for 24 hours).
Watching glass blowing is always fascinating. The workers here are real performers. I was tempted to jump in and do one of the many projects, then remembered I had no need for a snowman nor a kiss with a flower in it. But the work is nice, and if you really want to travel home with glass, there is a good shop with christmas ornaments, and jewelry and dishes. The little snowmen are actually quite special. Maybe I will make one next time.
Because of a Louisville freak snow storm, the gift shop was closed but they were still making the blown glass. The security guard apologized for our inconvenience. He told us the shop is just as interesting as watching the glass blowing. We were able to wander around looking at the exhibits. I sat and watched the glass being blown. It's amazing on how the blower and the shaper work together as though they were one person. One breath to much, or handling a bit to roughly, will end in disaster.
Saw an exhibit online and was surprised to find it offered as part of a package @ 21c Hotel. Very friendly artisans explained how the glass objects were made. We even got to make our own ornaments! Gift shop with lots of things to take home for gifts-or take home for yourself :-)
My husband and I stopped in here while visiting Louisville, not really knowing what to expect. The glass work is exceptional! Every piece is unique and worth taking a second look! Our favorite part was viewing the actual glass blowing and watching a beautiful piece of glass art take shape right in front of us! They make what is probably very hard work and skilled art look so effortless! There were kids in the group with us and they were fascinated as well! This truly is something that the whole family, regardless of age, will enjoy!
