Always has a great selection of quality pieces. I have never been disappointed. It is free with donations accepted. Often gets remarkable displays of unique and original art.
If you find "art museums" intimidating, give the Holter a try. It is small enough to visit in an hour or two, comfortable and welcoming, with a friendly staff that really seems to care if you had a good stay. On a recent visit, there was a display of ceramic arts from the well known area institution, the Archie Bray, and also an excellent, varied juried show of local painters from The Art Center. The gift shop is well stocked and an excellent place to pick up a gift or souvenir at a range of prices. There is no admission charge -- though I'm sure donations dropped into the box are very welcome.
If you would like to see some high-quality art in a restful setting, pay the Holter a visit. In early June, there was a wonderful exhibit of local ceramic artists from the Archie Bray Foundation, but there were paintings and sculptures to delight the eye and the soul. Good gift store, and a pleasant welcome from the receptionist on duty. The museum is free, but we were so delighted with it that we left a donation.
A nice stroll with my Mom here. And seeing local artist was nice to see how talented the people are here in Helena. If you have time take a stroll through, Its Free also!
You bet, and well worth the time to visit. The Museum has a permanent collection, but also has some excellent traveling exhibitions - a couple of years ago they featured some photographs by Ansel Adams. A real Helena highlight
Given the small size of our city, this museum is very good. When we visited, the Holder was hosting a showing of Ansel Adams photos, plus modern works by Native American artists and an exhibit relating to Montana's natural beauty. The facility itself is up to date and well kept. Parking is easy (frankly, we just walk over from our house), and there's never a crowd to contend with.
This is a small art museum that displays modern art. Not a bad place to spend an hour or less if you like modern art. There is a suggested donation of $8 per adult, but this museum is not worth that much.
The Holter is a really nice art museum, with a bright, welcoming atmosphere. Admission is by voluntary contribution. There is local art available for purchase in the shop and the galleries had some appealing exhibitions when we were there. Right downtown and worth a look.
The Holter is a great place for that quick 1 hour visit to clear your mind of the days distractions with some unusual and exciting art. Displays keep changing and challenging your mind!
If you love photography, art, etc, this is the play for you. The Holter Museum of Art should be on your "to do" list when in Helena. You will not be disappointed. The exhibits change periodically, so check to see what the current "show" is. Enjoy.
The Holter is world famous and world class. The paintings and exhibits are from around the world and also feature local artists. It is well worth a visit.
I quite enjoyed my visit to the Holter. I saw many fine examples of paintings and sculpture, but I especially liked the ceramics. Helena is famous for the Archie Bray Ceramic Institute and you can see the work of many of the artists here. I also like getting a chance to see the work of Montana artists.
I always visit art museums when I travel and this is a gem. I didn't expect to find important art by well known 20th century artists in the permanent collection nor the thoughtful local art. I was worried I'd see lots of "Western" art...cowboys and horses. Not the case at all. Great stuff.
We enjoy the Holter each time we visit Helena. Their displays are always changing and they feature local artists as well as having special exhibitions. Just now they have the Poindexter Legacy featuring an excellent collection of American artists. The gift shop is also a treat.
Wonderful museum and so well arranged. The Art of the Horse was the exhibit and it was mostly MT artists and we loved it. Attended a reception for the local school kids art contest and their art was amazing. They must have wonderful art teachers and photography instructors because these kids are unbelievable. I even found a watercolor I wanted to purchase.
