The Kerr Dam was completed in 1938 and dams the Flathead River a few miles below Flathead Lake southwest of Polson, Montana. Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater body of water west of the Mississippi River in the United States. The Flathead River is very beautiful both above and below the dam. In periods of the year when the road to the overlook is closed you can walk the mile and one-half to the overlook. It is good exercise and worth the effort. During the summer months you can drive to the overlook though there is a steep set of steps necessary to get down to the overlook; again worth the effort. If you are in or around Polson, Montana don't miss this little adventure.
This is a free, can't miss stop on your visit to Polson. Try to go during spring or early summer for the best viewing.
Well I've forgotten how many steps it is from the top of the stair way to the lowest observation platform, but it is well over 200. The view is worth the effort - you won't be disappointed - so long as you bring your camera.
It was 355 steps down and 355 up, but so worth the walk. Beautiful photo opportunity, and interesting facts posted on the signs!
The area around the dam is very quite and peaceful. Quite a few steps involved to get down to the viewing area. We saw a beautiful Peregrine Falcon while there. The surface of the water was like glass. Beautiful place.
Dam is located about 7 miles out of Polson. You have to climb a bunch (I think about 300) wood steps to get to it but it is an easy climb.
The Kerr Dam Overlook and Vista Point Trail is a few miles southwest of Polson, but worth the drive. Our GPS took us right to it. We counted 369 steps each way! Beautiful views!
In August there wasn't much water going over the dam, but the view of the lake and the canyon were amazing! Don't miss it.
This is an unusual attraction , but an interesting and well kept. The view is great and landscape is beautiful. A nice out of the way place so no crowds. Good for families or small groups. Couples seem to like it Also! Shows the awesome power of nature when tamed.
Absolutely beautiful. They say it is higher than Niagra Falls. Not sure about that, but a beautiful view that you have to see.
But so worth the view! This is a beautiful dam and river view - clear water - gorgeous falls! I am so glad we went!
Take the road to the scenic overlook - the dam was built in 1938 and is bigger than Niagara Falls! You can also go to downstream from the dam and go rafting.
We were told you have to go to the dam to take the overlook walk, not true, just follow signs to Kerr Dam Overlook. There is no overlook from the parking area, you will find the trail and just keep walking down, you haven't reached the end until you can see the dam in front of you. Plenty of parking, Walk of 1/2 mile or less with lots of steps (600?) but several spots with benches to rest. When you reach the end there is a glorious view and sound of rushing water. This might be quite difficult to reach if you are not used to walking uphill but if able to make the walk I recommend it. Stay for a while and enjoy it.
I love to see nature harnessed for power and I like a good hike. So in my trip to the area was glad to hear I could have both and with great views.
The trail down to the viewing area is steep. Most of it is made up of wooden steps with benches along the way. But once you get there the view is worth it. Looking towards the Mission Mountains looming above and behind the river is a great photo opportunity. The roar of the water going over the damn is impressive.
