I brought my students here for a field trip, and this place was awesome. They visited MOR before this museum, and I was afraid they were going to be bored. They were far from it! They loved all of the interactive exhibits, as well as all of the artifacts and information available. What a fantastic find! My new favorite place to visit!!!
Located in a picturesque & largely original building - the former Jail - this museum is largely staffed by volunteers and provides a unique opportunity to explore local and regional history. The archives section serves as a great resource for those working on specific research or a particular topic; the staff are always helpful too. Often overshadowed by the larger & more well-known Museum of the Rockies, this museum is also a real treat and definitely worth taking time to enjoy. While we enjoy the 'modern Bozeman', it's good to learn about the local history and heritage in the not-so-distant past displayed very effectively in the Pioneer Museum.
Amazing assortment of historical local and regional artifacts in the old jail for the Bozeman region. They even still had the old gallows where a man was hung decades ago.
It's a very nice local museum in which you can learn a lot about the local history. I enjoyed it because I use to work here as a dispatcher and jailer in this, the former Sheriff's Office and Sheriffs residence. It's nice that so much of the original jail is still intact, even the old gallows. If only the walls could talk they could tell some very interesting stories. Solitare, the Bull Pen, The Tank: all are names of sections of the old jail where prisoners were kept and the women cells were upstairs. It is quite enjoyable to go visit the place I used to work at and the museum has some very interesting and historical pieces. If your a history buff or just was to learn about the early history of the area this is a place to visit. It's a real gem in the City of Bozeman.
Easy to walk by but so glad we didn't! A wealth of knowledge, equipment and very well organised displays within an old jailhouse which adds to the whole experience. Appreciated time spent giving introduction and then being left to explore at our own pace.
A great way to understand the history of the area. Good for kids, adults, and teenagers. We are grateful to Charlie, one of the senior staff, and the time he took with us to share his insights. His rich understanding of the area and native peoples made our museum visit especially memorable. Plan on 1-2 hours.
We had driven by here many, many times without realizing it was there! Large, beautiful trees adorn the street and yard in front of this hidden gem of a museum on West Main Street in Bozeman! The location in the old jail makes it all the more interesting as you can step inside the cells. Both men and women were detained here during the early days. The displays are really excellent and the community has been very generous by donating or lending items for all of us to see. You really get a feel of days gone by when you visit here. The staff, and especially the Executive Director who took the time to visit with me, made us feel welcomed and were a wealth of information. We really enjoyed our visit to this museum of local history.
This museum had a wealth of information about the town's history. It was orginally the jail, and there are still some jail cells, and the hanging post were 1 man was actually hung. There are 2 floors to the museum, and also a research area. You can see all kinds of period clothing, household goods, guns and even cars. It is very encompassing, and very well organized. The people working there are also very knowledgeble, and will answer questions you have. This is the place you go for the walking tours of the town. There are a number of different walking tours of the town at different days and times.
You could spend hours in this small museum! It is so well done! LAid out in a small jail .This volunteers who man this museum can tell y everything about the Wild West!
This is housed in the old county jail and has all the look of the 1890's, come look and enjoy, little kids will even like this one.
It's a bit startling to start a tour in a jail cell with a noose hanging from the ceiling, but as you get into the museum, it was a great walk through Montana history. I especially liked the period costumes and the stories of early Bozeman. Well done!
WOW, this building is so filled with history and memoriblia. The way in which this museum is put together you can really feel the events they are showing. Many nice pieces on loan and gifted to this small but impressive museum. There is a small but adaquit gift shop if you'd like to buy books on Montana history or gift items. Montana is rich is history and much of it is showcased here.
Welcomed by a guide who gave me an introduction and in I went.Collections a bit random, basically what's been donated to the museum but for 5 dollars, can't complain too much
We had to stop into this museum as we were passing by & pleasantly surprised with the great displays inside. I highly recommend.
It was a treat to find this museum and Charlie gave us very good information about Bozeman and its early days. Located in the old jail, there's a lot to see and learn.
