After a 6 day backpacking trip in nearby Glacier National Park, nothing would have tasted better! All the beers we tasted were fantastic, and the food hit the spot! Thanks for the great T-shirts as well, I love my going to the sun ipa goat shirt!
If you get to enjoy a day in Whitefish whether it's summer or winter, you have to stop by this brewery. The TPA may be one of the best beers I've ever had. The place has many choices on tap and even some food available, but really the TPA is what stands out the most. With countless outdoor activities near Whitefish, I am sure you can find an excuse to visit Great Northern Brewery Company.
Just stopped in to sample the Great Northern Brewing Company beers and was surprised to find a "fruit" beer that I actually liked...a "first". (The Wild Huckleberry Wheat lager was very subtle/"not" sweet/refreshing and a nice surprise.) The IPA (Going to the Sun) and the red lager (Good Medicine) were also amongst our faves in the 6-sample flight that we enjoyed one late afternoon. The downstairs area was comfortable and friendly and we enjoyed visiting with other patrons and with the server, who also provided a great pizza recommendation. Highly recommend to the beer enthusiasts!
We enjoyed a flight of beers upstairs! The price was $7 for seven 6 oz pours this was a great bargain! Sadly we cannot buy Great Northern in Georgia so I fully appreciated these great brews and will be looking for someone to ship them to Georgia if not more incentive to move to Montana!
Stopped in for a quick lunch on a weekday (was heading to airport). Service was fast - food was hot and fresh. Had the BLT on toasted bread with homemade root beer - very good. View of the mountains could not be beat. Hope to pass this way again and stop in for dinner and sample some beers. Menu looked great.
The draught house is located right downtown on central avenue in a beautiful building. You can order beer on the first or second floor. The second floor quasi-pub was being renovated when we visited but looked like a great spot overlooking the brewery. We ordered a sampler of all of their beers on offer (6). Of the six, I thought three had merit to my taste but well worth the try. I would recommend you try if you have time while visiting Whitefish.
Great place to stop by for a beer while in whitefish especially during the farmers market. Or if you just happen to want a nice place to sit and look at big mountain. Good shuffleboard table.
My wife and I visited the tasting room after dinner one night and found the staff there very helpful in describing the 6 or 7 beers on tap that night. Also, they pour a healthy amount for each beer (4 or 6 oz) - and do not charge! We also went on the brewery tour the next day at 3:00 and was about 35-40 minutes long. Pay $5, but get 16oz draft and the tour. Well worth it.As others have stated, small tasting room, but get very personal service and the beer is excellent.
We stopped in for a few samples of this locally operated brewery. The staff was very friendly and the beer selections were very good. The sampling area is kind of small, but it was not too busy so we got a seat right at the bar. If you like fresh local beer, you would enjoy a visit here! They have beer swag for sale as well!
We went to Whitefish to ski in Feb 2013. Of course I stopped at the great northern to check out there beer. I was so impressed with there follow the sun beer that that is all I tried. It is a great IPA with plenty of hop character. I also drank it at the ski resort and bought it in bottles at the super market. We plan to go back to Whitefish for a month of skiing this winter so I will try there other beers as well.
I tasted the 2 red styles (Scottish & Imperial) and the wheat and settled on the Schwarzbier (black lager). I would have gone for the Imperial red, BUT at 8%, a pint would have made me ineligible to drive for longer than I would have liked ;-} and.....my ice cream levels were also running low...Although I'm a beer quantity lightweight, not so with the tasting. I've made a point of stopping at micro breweries all over the country since the mid 90's and made beer pilgrimages to Belgium (BEST beer in the world!!!) and Pilsen (BEST pilsener in the world!!!). Soooooo......when I say you can't lose with any beer choice at Great Northern, I ain't just blowing smoke (which by the way you can do upstairs outside). What I look at in a beer to differentiate its quality is mainly the complexity of taste. 5 star for all of the beers I tried. Kudos to the Brewmaster! The black lager that I selected was very dark colored, had a wonderful slightly smoky, malty nose and went down smooth. We sat and sipped in the second floor bar area and looked out over the town & the mountains. It was late afternoon on a Sunday....not very busy. We had no problem talking over the beer selections with the very knowledgeable bartender. We didn't order food so I can't speak to that, hence the 4 stars (but 5 stars for the beer). Our goal for this visit was to sit & relax and enjoy a quality beer. Mission accomplished! Cheers!
We came here around 8pm on a Saturday to try out some of their brews we've never had before. The concept looked fun, and we were up for anything. When we ordered at the lower level counter, the waitress had an extremely bad attitude! We wanted the 6 beer sampler. Without us counting how many options there were (8), she asked us we would need to chose. I responded by saying "which ever are the most popular". She then gave an annoyed look and said they are all good, and I don't know what kind of beer you like. She seemed annoyed for some reason...even though there was only one other customer on her floor. Well we decided to get the 8 beer sampler. Upstairs there were several rooms. One is a typical pub, the other an odd games room. We sat in the empty game room to throw a few darts. A few minutes in, a few guys came In with a small child wanting to play games....seriously, are we not in a bar? The room is 100% unsupervised as well...not once did we see any staff. Might of been a good idea because during this particularly night, one table near us was causing a stir, spilling their beer, and making subtle threats to a table near us.The beer was average. Our favourite was the huckleberry. Overall, this place is ok, but seems to be half managed with staff coming off as being very snobby. Once was enough for us 4.
This should probably be posted under restaurants but TA does not recognize he Draught House as a restaurant. The Great Northern Brewery is really the attraction, so after some confusion regarding the the naming of this place we were enlightened by the staff. The Great Northern Brewery houses the Black Star Draught House. We ordered the sampler (I believe there were 9 in all for $13.) Not much that I really cared for, but DH is the beer drinker and he enjoyed the darker brews, especially Good Medicine.Although previous reviewers have not been very complimentary of the food, the four of us found the sandwiches delicious! I loved my grilled cheese, basil and tomato. The view of the mountain is lovely and our service provider was delightful. As mentioned, there is a tiny bar as you enter on the first floor, then the draught house and game room on the second floor. We enjoyed our visit.
After walking around downtown Whitefish, this is a great place to take a break and try a few beers. Go up stairs and have a sampler. They let you pick which beers you want to try, and how many. My freind and I split eight samples, and between the two of us there wasn't a drop left.
I was there on a Monday and there was a special on 20 oz. mugs.Great value and I wished I had not eaten a few hours earlier so I could go upstairs and eat,and try some more of their beers.Only a few stools but quite a few people were there just to grab a quick drink and refill growlers.I did not stay long as I was tired from a long drive but will make sure I will be able to stay next time.
