I love Hebgen Lake. My husband and his father go on fishing trips to Hebgen every chance they get. I usually don't fish. I just relax on the shore and enjoy nature. The water is clean, the lake is quite large, and I always see wildlife nearby. There are a few campgrounds, cabins, and other lodgings around if you are looking for a place to stay. There are bears around, so be mindful. We had one come into out camp at night a few times. It was a bit scary! Just use proper bear safety and you should be fine :)
beautiful day where we saw mountain sheep. the scenery is beyond description and no crowds this time of year
We snowmobiled the Cougar Creek Trail to the Horse Butte Trail/Loop on January 14, 2015 and had the entire trail system to ourselves - we never saw other snowmobiles. The ride up to the Horse Butte Lookout was fantastic and the view allowed up there are incredible. Only disappointment was the lookout tower was closed. We would have loved to have climbed to the top for even more amazing views. Road the Madison Arm Trail along the lake on our way back to West Yellowstone. The trails were in perfect condition and fun was had by all.
We got here on a half-daytrip from West Yellowstone on our snowmobiles. First we took the Madison Arm Loop being able to see the lake from the South. We encountered a dogsled coming from oppposite direction running on full speed, training for a match next week. Awesome. We also completed the Horse Butte Trail, so we saw the arm of the lake from the other side, at the same time climbing to a higher altitud into a competely white, eerie landscape. Really great views and very exciting snowmobiling. When we got back to West Yellowstone we ran into the dog sled race-teams and we learned a lot about the dogs and their amazing capacities. A moment a will never forget.
Set it a beautiful bowl, fed by the Madison River, this is a mecca for fishermen as well as a gorgeous place to spend a vacation. Very close to Yellowstone, actually a nicer place to visit for a quick swim and picnic than Yellowstone lake. Also close to West Yellowstone for first class accommodations, food and entertainment (Playmill Theater). Don't miss!
We usually camp here for a week or two the last weeks in June. The fishing is wonderful. Large rainbow and brown trout. This is a forest service campground, with no power, and water at intervals around the camping circles. The best place is "A" circle, closest to the boat launch. Don't know if the allow tent camping or not, but hard side units is best this is Bear Country for sure! Fish around 10 am and 4 pm, once July rolls around, it's kinda too late.
