A beautiful ride into the scenic mountains of West Virginia! Let the locals tell you the stories of the past. Check out the gift shop and enjoy your stay! I've been going back every year for this trip since I was a baby. Especially in the fall the scenes are breathtaking!
I work for a railroad, and I didn't really want to ride a train on my vacation. I'm glad I did. Not only a great history lesson, but it was a lot of fun. I suggest this trip for anyone who has an interest in the history of the railroad.
If at all possible you need to take this 4 1/2 hour ride to Blue Knob! It is so cool riding on a steam train run with coal. Take a bag lunch to eat at the Whittiker stop or when you reach the top.
This is one very scenic train ride. Fall time is the best time to take this ride. Wow is it some beautiful scenery. You get to learn and see first had how logging was done on the mountain's very neat. They explain everything very nicely. Just a very enjoyable ride to the top of the mountain and back. So worth the I believe four hours trip up and back.I don't know which was better riding my motorcycle to though Wv to Cass. Or the train ride itself. Wc is just wild and beautiful.
Cass is amazing. The train ride to the top and back is rough 4 hours and wonderful. Great scenery and overlooks. They give history at various points and the whistle is great. There are many great photo areas. They stop halfway on the way up and there is an old station there , along with restrooms and snack bars. It was cold when we went so I recomm a nice thermos of cocoa, coffee or soup. You can bring your own snacks aboard. I will be going back in the summer during my family reunion! I highly recommend this place.
We have ridden the train at Cass a number of times over the years, first with our daughter and now with our grandchildren. We enjoy each ride as though it were new to us. You feel as though you have been taken back in time as you see the black clouds of coal smoke rise from the steam engines and hear the sounds of the train whistle blow. As the pressure builds, the locomotive is driven at full steam, and the journey up the mountain begins. The staff is well-informed of the history of this place and they are friendly and eager to share the information with you. You learn of a time when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. The breath-taking views of the mountains are a photographer's paradise. Usually you see deer and other wildlife on the rides. Take your time through the museum and the gift shop as well. You can buy tasty ice cream treats at the old company store or eat lunch or dinner there. We have been to the top of the mountain at Bald Knob (the second highest peak in West Virginia) several times and we have also taken the shorter ride to Whittaker Station several times. There is an old logging camp at Whittaker station with several pieces of preserved logging machinery on the grounds as well as the old logging huts, etc. On the weekends you can buy tickets for a buffet dinner and Bluegrass music at the Whittaker station which makes for quite an enjoyable evening. I highly recommend this for couples as well as families. Cass Scenic Railroad rides are one of our family's favorite activities.
We enjoyed this trip immensely. It was very interesting to see how the logging was accomplished on the mountain.
I hadn't been to Cass in several years, and I wanted to travel back to Bald Knob. It was well worth the 6 hr car drive and the money I spent to stay over night in the area. The staff at Cass do so much to make you feel welcomed. I had forgotten to charge my camera battery. I woman in the station was very helpful in that she charged my battery for me while I explored the town. There is an opportunity to stay in a company house on the property. I think that may be something I'll consider next time.
Wow what a disappointment. My sister and I took the Halloween Train ride. I was very dissapointed, I thought Halloween was supposed to be "gobblins, and boogieman, you know the fun stuff. I could have stayed in my car and had more fun. There was people dressed up but what for? We rode to the top, and was given a bag of candy and told the concession stand was open for hot dogs, chips, etc (big deal). They had a little car decorated for halloween but nothing to write home about. I thought well it will be better going back down the mountain, "no way", the only way this group was having any fun was if you made the fun yourself. Some music finally started playing from somewhere and we finally got the gang going, it was short lived thought, when the ride was over. SUCH A VERY DISAPPOINTING TRIP, DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Jen P
I just can't imagine not going all the way to the top to Bald Knob...such beautiful views. We went to Cass for our first time at beginning of October and the leaves were just changing and the views were spectacular!! The trip up and back was approximately four and a half hours but it was well worth it and didn't seem that long! Go a couple hours before your train departure time if you want to enjoy the history of Cass by touring the small museum and seeing a quick movie and seeing a model of the town. We missed that part since we did not know to be there early, bummer! There is also a walking tour of the town you can take w/a guide or on your own. Loved the whole experience and highly recommend for all ages!!
A long twisty road to get to the railway, but what a trip when you get there. We went to the top, and the views were stunning, especially as the leaves were turning. Poor quality coal so lots of smoke and fuss. We also had a very knowledgeable lady show us round the works, allin all agreat day out.
We went on the train in October and the leaves were just beautiful. We took the short trip to Whittaker Station which was plenty long. The stop at Whittaker Station was a pleasant surprise. Such an awesome areato get off train, stretch your legs and take in the views. The train was comfortable and the cost very reasonable.Well worth the time
We went to bald knob - to the top. Loved the train ride. It was a four hour round trip, but did not feel that long. there is a shorter trip that only goes to whittaker station, but we would recommend the longer trip.It is a steam engine so lots of good pictures with the smoke pouring out. It is beautiful in October with the fall colors.. It is off the beaten path, but well worth it. There is a big gift store with lots of good train related items. One of the best train rides we have done.
Train ride was really fun on a beautiful warm (75ish) day in early October. The leaves were absolutely beautiful.
I hadn't ridden on a train in years and made this attraction a priority. And we got our money's worth! Our locomotive broke down--which was very uncommon--and our four hour trip turned into a five hour plus trip! But the scenery on the ride is not spectacular; especially if you live in mountains. The train attendants, etc. were very gracious, with the exception of the ticket seller, who wouldn't last long if I were running that show. Rude and snappy to several folks as I watched. Overall, take the short ride, you'll get the gist of the attraction.
