We didn't know about this cemetery till we were at the lot where John Brown was hung and a gentleman told us about it. Visited with a lady from the church who said there was over 75 descendants of George Washington. Apparently his brother Charles founded the city.
You have to be a real history nerd to seek out this place. The old tombstones need to be cleaned. Great project for a church youth group.
from the Carriage Inn B and B. We walked this gem and saw all the Washingtons (George's 3 brothers and family) who are buried there. It is a nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle. It's free and it's fascinating.
The cemetery is worth a trip to discover the many family members of our founding father, and to puzzle out why so many descendants are also named George!
It was a lovely stroll though the cemetery. We went both at day and night. The walkways are treacherous at night, but with caution and a light it was doable. A lovely quiet neighborhood to walk through with fabulous old architecture to enjoy.
A lot of George Washington's relatives are buried here. This includes several named after him!. Very old cemetery with ornate headstones. We were unable to tour the Episcopal Church but the stained glass windows are awe inspiring.
If you like cemeteries and history this is the place for you. A large portion of the cemetery is dedicated to the Washington family. Charles Washington - George's brother - who the town is named after and his descendants are buried there as are a lot of other distinguished Americans. Walking through the cemetery is a walk through history. It is easy to find the cemetery - just a block off the main street.
A beautiful old church with well cared for cemetery with lots generations of locals buried in cemetery. Good for history and geneology research.
We wanted to see the old marked graves of the Washington family, they site is so well kept and the graves stones kept tidy and neat, it was hard to believe they were that old.
There are descendents of Charles Washington buried here (George Washington's brother).
For two years I lived in the Charles Town area, and passed this church with its impressive cemetery many times. I had heard that it was the burial site of numerous members of the Washington family. Even though I sought out the seven remaining Washington estates that still stood in the early 1970s, I never stopped to view their resting places at Zion Episcopal Church. While on a walking tour of historic Charles Town during it September Charles Town heritage fair, the group passed within blocks of the church, so after the tour was over, I made a point of visiting the site. It is a quaint rural type cemetery that now is surrounded by the town. Within its brick walls are buried members of the community from the 1700s through to at least the late 20th century. I found the wording on the earlier monuments to be very touching and in many cases the monuments were quite impressive in size and shape. Many of those interred are in family plots so with careful study you can discern the grand parents, parents and children, etc. If you want more insight into the cemetery, by all means take the Charles Town Ghost Tour when it's offered. There are some spooky things going on in burial ground at night!
there is something about this cemetery, some sort of mystic that seems to linger around the graves, well at least to me. their is an heir of regality, with so many washington relatives buried there. its always been rumored to be haunted, and now i believe the rumors, because just this week i saw a ghost there, it was really creepy, but fascinating and intrigueng in a way. the graves there are absolutely beautiful, they come in all sorts of intricate designs, and some date back to the 1700s. one of my favorite graves is one that looks so much like a tree, it would have fooled me if it were not a chalky white. it is such an intricate and fascinating grave, gorgeous. i love it at that cemetery, and fortunately it is only a five minute walk from my house. go there sometime. the cemetery, not my house. please!
