I recently spent President's Day weekend with friends at Timberline to try out my rudimentary snowboarding skills. The mountain wasn't bad (not a true "Four Seasons" or "resort" by any means, but I wasn't exactly expecting Chamonix or Whistler). Prices were higher due to the holiday weekend (and they had an equipment shortage -- they ran out of size 9 women's snowboarding boots). At the very least I had a good experience on the slopes and a really good instructor (highly recommend Brianna) who helped me go from lopsided fledgling with zero edge control to linked, skidded turns in under two hours. Overall, the fluffy snowfall that weekend helped a great deal and the "lodge" bar had a decent hot toddy to enjoy between runs. Would I return? Probably not, but it's a decent place to go if you are nearby and the staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. Oh, and I highly recommend the onion rings over the fries at the restaurant -- trust me on this one.

Timberline is an excellent resort for the beginner or the expert skier. They have a great variety of slopes always perfectly groomed. The housing around the mountain, which we have stayed in three different ones, are so cozy and well stocked. The ski school and instructors or top notch- some of the best in the business!

We discovered Timberline Four Seasons resort in January 2015 and it is by far our favorite mountain to snowboard in the eastern United States. Every time we have been the snow conditions are fantastic. If has some great intermediate to advanced trails and we love that it's not too crowded. It also boasts that it has the longest beginner trail in the east... The 2 mile long Salamander trail is fun and easy. The lodge and facilities are not posh or luxurious but hell I'm not going there to sit around in the lodge. They are currently working on an snowfunding initiative to improve the grounds and make it more sustainable for the future, which is really awesome!!! We got 3 season passes good for the rest of 2015 season and through 2016 season for a heck of a good deal. Check it out at snowfunding.com. They are offering some great deals to help fund this project and we are happy to help. The owner and his wife are very personable and go above and beyond to help accommodate any requests we have made. We're so lucky to have this resort within a 3 hour drive!!! It truly is a hidden gem, so don't tell everyone!!!

My weekend at Timberline was perfect! I couldn't have asked for much better snow conditions. The powder was wonderful. Also staying in Timberline's bunk house is super affordable. I'm am definitely looking forward to revisiting this resort!

We traveled to Timberline this past weekend for a Fri-Sun stay at the timbers inn, Timberline's new slopeside hotel. The price for the hotel was great ($169/nt) compared to other ski resort lodges. The location of the hotel was great and the room was fine, very clean and basic. It had everything we needed. The only downfall is that there is no registration or front desk at the hotel so you have to do so at the Lodge, which can be time consuming. We skiied and the slopes were fine, decent for the east coast. The lift is VERY slow though and although they advertise having 3 lifts one of them only goes to the bunny slope and there is only 1 main lift to the top of the mountain. We took advantage of the student deals and were able to get a lift ticket and rentals for only $35! You can't beat that! Now for the cons: the service at this place is absolutely AWFUL. -We waited forever to get our rentals because they only had 1 person working on a peak season Saturday morning. They had no system of line so people were cutting. They need to make a clear line or have a take a number system.-We ate dinner twice at the restaurant/pub (I think it's called Timbers grill or something). The first night the service was terrible, our orders were wrong, and we waited forever. The decor is definitely a blast from the past and could use some updating. The next night is really when things went downhill. We grabbed a table by the fireplace and there was another family at the table next to us. They have a lady walking around interrupting your dinner asking if you want a massage. One guy took her up on it and she set up the massage chair RIGHT NEXT TO OUR TABLE. It really ruined our dinner, and the man even seemed very uncomfortable having a massage in the middle of a restaurant. Isn't that supposed to be relaxing? If they are going to let this lady do massages it should be in a separate area not in the dining room and she should not be allowed to interrupt your dinner to ask if you would like one. Our service this night at dinner was terrible again. After dinner we moved into the bar area for some drinks.-The bartenders charge whatever they want for drinks and don't have consistent pricing. I ordered a yuengling draft and got charged $3.50 once, $4.00 once, and $5.00 once. I actually saw one patron "negotiating" prices with a bartender. This is unacceptable to me. We then saw two bartenders get in an actual fight, screaming and cursing at each other, in the middle of the bar. The entire thing was just very trashy and unprofessional.Overall, the hotel and skiing was okay, especially for the price, but we will probably not return. If i'm paying for a vacation to a ski resort I expect to at least have decent service. This place just did not care. We'll stick to Seven Springs or Snowshoe.

The two resorts Canaan Valley and Timberline are located only about 2 ~ 3 miles apart. Both have remarkably good ski conditions for the mid-Atlantic region. Both have a fair assortment of green, blue and black trails; Canaan Valley also has a "carpet" for children who are just beginners. On weekdays, there is never a lift line at all; in fact, each resort has two parallel chairs, and only one is running on weekdays. Timberline has a vertical drop of 1000 ft, and Canaan Valley around 850 feet. The cycle time from bottom of lift to bottom again is just under 15 minutes. They offer various combination packages (rentals & lift ticket) which keeps the cost down. Two juniors and one adult for under $100 is a mighty good deal anywhere you go. Seniors over 70 get free lift tickets. The black trails are challenging, especially a few that are ungroomed. The hardest trail at Timberline is very difficult, and has a stern warning at the top. Access from the east (WashDC suburbs) improved greatly when West Virginia opened up a new stretch of freeway that crosses rugged geography; it takes less than 3 hours for that trip. Access from the North is via Oakland Maryland, and covering that 35-mile distance takes just under an hour, if the pavement is dry.

Nice ski slopes, for those that had working snow making machines.Besides this the place is falling apart.Lifts are very old, slow and in disrepair. The Lodge is cramped, bad dining options and also failing apart.Maybe when the new highway completes they will upgrade. I would hope the state of West Virgina would chip in. With a new lodge, new Lifts and working snow making machines this place could easily be the best Ski Resort in the Mid Atlantic. The mountain is much better than surrounding resorts in WV, MD, PA and Va., but in it's current condition it's a little scary and gets worse every year.I've been coming here for 5 years but not sure I'll be back. I'll probably stick to the more Modern Canaan Valley Resort nearby.

There was a lot of snow and not just on the slopes. The slopes are always groomed perfectly. I really enjoy mid-week skiing when there are not lift lines. They have some nice long (2 mile and 1.5 mile) slopes as well as some challanging slopes. Good for beginners to experts. Good ski school. I hope to ski over 40 days this season.

Timberline has many ski runs -in varying degrees of difficulty- for the whole family. We had beautiful weather, and the snow was mostly powder. The 2 ski lifts are quite slow, and due to the nice weather the lines for the lifts was very long. It felt like we spent more time waiting and riding than skiing. The rental process is a bit lengthy too. Most places exchange your boots for rental ski boots. This place leaves you stuck wearing ski boots, holding skis and poles, and trying to find a place to stash your boots for the day. You need 4 quarters for a locker, which we didn't know about in advance. If you can go on a weekday, that is probably your best bet.

Came here with a boy scout group - our group included scouts and adults who stayed in the bunkhouse, and adults who rented a nearby (but not slopeside) home. Pros: good snow (mostly snowmaking), good steep, fast, groomed black diamond slopes, slopes are not crowded when skiing. Cons: slow lifts, few moguls. Great area if your group includes beginners and more advanced skiers. The bunkhouse is definitely no-frills and the resort food is basic. Kind of an old-fashioned resort feel. On the other hand, the slopeside houses and our non-slopeside rental were lovely and very up-to-date. We will definitely go again. Count on a solid 4 hour drive from the DC area; this is a fairly remote resort.

It was not a holiday weekend and we decided to drive to WV for a 3-day-weekend. I was able to get a great last minute rental from Best of Canaan (5 minutes from the slopes) and a discount on equipment in one stop. The lodge is comfortable and the food is great. Although it was super busy the lifts were always working and we enjoyed the trip. We will be back for sure.

We have been skiing at Timberline on a regular basis for about six years (when kids were then 3 and 5). On the plus side, the resort is a really good place for kids. The kids ski program is superb. I feel very comfortable leaving my kids with the instructors, including one with special needs. The instructors bring patience and enthusiasm to the program and one of my kids can now ski any slope on the mountain. The slope variety is decent with a very nice long beginner slope (Salamander) as well as some really fun and steep hills (Off the Wall). If you are ready to leave the kids and have a fun day of skiing with just adults, this is the place to go. With the exception of Presidents Day Weekend (which I now skip despite having a ski pass) and the weekend when they host races, the slopes are not too crowded. On a cold day, there are no waits. The chairs are relatively slow, so that means fewer people on the mountain, which I personally like given my young skiers. I would rather have a slow lift than an overcrowded and unsafe mountain. The downsides of this mountain include below average snowmaking which sometimes means lots of ice and fewer slopes open than others in the region. The facilities are also below par, with REALLY bad food (we usually eat at our place, Subway, or the burrito place in Davis for lunch). For dinner, Whitegrass and the Deerfield Restaurant are good. Finally, the lifts are slow and a bit unreliable. I know people complain about this all the time, but I see the upside as described above. I fear the day when these are replaced with high-speed quads. The owners will reap rewards and it will happen some day, but I'm content for now.

The lodge is laughable. There is a restaurant and a cafeteria. The cafeteria was the worst food i have ever eaten or not for that matter. Cold bad bowling alley type pizza....Fries were cold and old. Soda had zero fizz. Resort is in need of major upgrades. Super slow lifts. Takes about 13 mins to ride up. Website said they had night skiing mlk day....not true closed at 430. Trails are decent but this is not a destination ski resort. It is a day trip place at best. We won't be back though. I won't even begin to address the house rental on the slopes because that was not ski resorts fault. Salamander is a nice long beginner run though. Cheaper lift ticket prices though. Hills overall pretty good.

We still nearby cabin (Craig's cherrywood) with plenty of room for nine people to stay comfortably. It was a hot tub full kitchen washer and dryer. We went snowboarding for three days and although there was no 'real' snow the slopes are open and everything was good. Long 2 mile runs sure beat Ohio slopes. Everyone was super friendly and inviting. We would definitely go back.

We come to Canaan Valley every other year the week between Christmas and New Years. We have our choice to ski/snowboard at Canaan Valley or Timberline. We have done both and both are great, however I will choose Timberline over Canaan every time as long as my green trail Salomander is open…2.2 miles from the top of the mountain is my absolute favorite!!
