Park was always a good place to go as a kid! As time goes by it gets in more disrepair. Good place to start with your younger children for amusement parks. My teen finds it boring now. :( Overall, it's worth the trip but it is a little bit expensive for the quality of rides that they offer.
I was raised in the area and have visited the park many times over the last 58 years. I have gone as a child (with my parents), teenager (without my parents), parent, and grandparent. I never fail to have a good time. No, it isn't Kings Island, but I don't go there expecting it to be. The food is exactly as I remember it. It is the only place around here to get those greasy corn dogs. They are great! Rides have come and gone over the years, but the old standards are always there. Last visit, May 2014, I rode the Big Dipper with my youngest grandchild. I hope to take great-grandchildren there someday.
I have grown up here as well as my children. It's a little pricey for it's size and food considering we can drive to King's Island for almost the same price.
I have lived in the area for 14 years and never visited this park because of the price. We finally went with a group of friends and I was pretty bored. My 2 yr old daughter loved it but it was horrible for anyone over 12. I would recommend driving to a larger park.
Originally the destination of a trolley line, park captures mainstream America. Good value and perfect day for younger children and the adults that accompany them
For the convenience of being close by it's ok but it defiantly needs some repairs but it does bring back nice childhood memories
Camden Park has been around for 111 years. And while it was decently clean park it is showing it's age some. But my family has been going for five generations.....since about 1918,,...so we took our kids and grandkids to keep the streak alive. We have film footage of me and my brother at the park in 1959.....and my grandkids rode many of those same rides. Parking was $4....pretty cheap as far as parks go. Only 5 handicap cpots for a park this big was a bit frustrating. Needless to say we didn't get on arriving 30 minutes after opening. Tickets were reasonable at $15 if bought ahead of time. Not sure what they are at the gate. It was fun for us....finding things that were there when we were kids. I had not been in the park for 35 years myself. And it was pretty much like being in the 1950's......I am sure many of the rides are from that era. A good number of rides for the grandkids ages 4 and 2. The 4 year olds rode the Big Dipper coaster a number of times. I did too, once, but this OLD coaster is ROUGH ride for old folks. We rode 17 different rides in all. Some a few times over. We had a good time....but some of it was recreating some photos of old trips to the park.....some almost 100 years old. We had lunch at the WV Grille inside the park. It was clean with nice cold A/C. It was average or better park food....with average or cheaper prices. A meal of BBQ, fires and drinks for two people was $20. I've spent that on 3 drinks at Disney. The issues??? Ride attendants need some personal skills. Some running the kiddy rides acted as if they had never seen a child in their life! No talking, directions or even a smile to anyone. The park could use some maintenance, paint and updating. Nothing dangerous but small things that it seems would be easy to do. The log ride broke early in the day and did not return.....when asked an attendant told us the 'repair guys' were gone for the day?!?!?!I would love to see them spend just a little money....and a little creativity to return the park to what a great place we thought it was as kids. But it was busy the day we went....so there is not much of a reason to do anything. For the cost and the amount of rides we rode, not much waiting, it was worth it. But it could be so much more.
At least they offered a discount when we visited - $40 per car. Multiple ride malfunctions, even one my kids were on - brakes went out on the Rattler. Poor lighting after dark. No lights on the log ride.
Camden Park is a very old amusement park that in its day was the best around. It is small scale and good for young families because it is small. The park could use some major painting and updating. There are some modern rides for older kids and rides seem to be in fairly good operations. Food is very inexpensive and good. It was clean.
Like most people who grew up in Southern West Virginia, Camden Park was my first amusement park and the Big Dipper was my first rollercoaster. My first visit was in the early 1970's when I was little, and my last visit was in the late 1970's when I was 12 years old and attended with teammates from our football team.I decided to take my wife and daughter to Camden Park this summer after a 35 year hiatus. I saw pictures on Tripadvisor and read negative reviews, so I prepared my family for the worst. We bought tickets online from their website and saved money off of the regular admission. http://www.camdenpark.com/When we arrived, parking cost $4. There is ample parking, and it was semi-crowded on a Friday afternoon. The first thing I noticed at the entrance was how nice things looked. Plenty of flowers and it all looked festive. While we were there, a few attractions were down for repair and a few had parts that were out of commission, but everything was fun, safe, and worked well. The roller coasters are fabulous, and though the Big Dipper looks like it needs to be painted, it is a really fun coaster. The Little Dipper is rough, but is an historic coaster in that it is the only one of its kind left. The Haunted House is a classic pretzel coaster, and is also registered as an historic ride. The Park contains your standard rides... Tilt A Whirl, Scrambler, Carousel, etc. The Whip is a classic old whip ride and the log flume ride is nice, but has a long wait. The food is good at Camden Park, and very affordable. You MUST get a pronto pup (corn dog). The pronto pups are just as good in 2014 as they were in 1977.By no means is Camden Park a destination Park like King's Island or Six Flags. What it is is a 110 year old historic local park that brings back great memories for those of us who grew up in the area. If you are passing through, are a classic coaster enthusiast, or live in southern WV, then it is well worth a trip on a great summer afternoon to Camden Park.
I went here as a child but had not been in over 30 years. I was pleasantly surprised based on some of the reviews I had read. It needs paint and the bathrooms needed cleaned but all rides were operating all day and staff was very friendly. Lines were not long and I got our tickets online for $14.99 each. Concessions were reasonable. ..cheaper than at the movies. You will be disappointed if you are expecting Kings Island or Disney World. If you go expecting a fair type experience with a log flume and coaster etc you will be pleased! Great experience!
The bumper cars caught fire last year. I think the Big Dipper is actually operated by the termites that live in the wooden structure. Bring lots of bandages and ointment if you plan on staying all day. Also, it might be beneficial to bring along some hepatitis shots...loads of fun!
If you like the old roadside style amusement park, you owe it to yourself to visit Camden Park. What a great time, especially for my daughter. As long as you don't mind old rides that have a mind of their own (frequently closed for repair), you can't lose.
I've lived in Huntington for the better part of a decade and just made my first trip to Camden Park.We had an absolute blast. We bought our admission tickets online (~$15/each), which I think is a bargain compared to similar parks where you pay per ride. Yes, it's no Cedar Point or Kennywood, but there more than enough rides to keep my family busy for the day. Once inside, soda, ice cream, and french fries were reasonably priced -- more expensive than McDonalds but cheaper than a movie theater. The park is a neat piece of history, being only one of thirteen remaining trolley parks in the USA, and the only one with an Adena mound inside. There was some pealing paint but nothing seemed run down. The bathrooms were clean and the concessions (entirely junkfood) were surprisingly good. For being predominately teenagers, the employees were incredibly nice and helpful, especially on the little kid rides.
I grew up in Huntington, WV and this was the place to go for many of my years for fun. So disappointed on last visit. Time and neglect have really taken it's toll overall. The admission is ridiculous and the fee for parking. I know it takes money to keep the park up, pay employees, etc... but come on - use some of it to paint, repair and clean up. My biggest disappointment was the best food in the park - corn dogs/pronto pups. Greasy and not well cooked. So long Camden Park - won't be back.
