Passing through Lewisburg, it was great to find live theatre in Lewisburg, and an Equity theatre at that. We saw Chekov's "The Cherry Orchard" with a mix of professional and amateur actors, and it showed. It was great just to be able to see and support live theatre in a small West Virginia town.
My husband & I 'stumbled upon' the current production on the "Man of La Mancha," our most favorite musical, by chance at the Greenbrier Valley Theater; Lewisburg, WV. We had our first opportunity to visit the Lewisburg, WV area, when deciding to attend this production of the "Man of La Mancha, the wkend of June 20 & 21, a four hrs drive from our home near Huntington, WV. To experience this musical at the Greenbrier Valley Theater was more that worth the long drive : )From the moment we walked into the Greenbrier Valley Theater, we felt warmly greeted. The friendliness of all associated w/ this theater was a unique experience. Who would ever expect "Broadway-like talent" in this small town of about 4, 000? This small theater, sitting in the semi-round (stadium seating - looking down, not looking up at the stage), with 'not a bad seat in the house,' unique experience, did not make you feel like you were just watching a remarkable musical, just an observing audience ....... with the closeness of the stage, one felt like member of the performing cast. We can only say that "La Mancha" which is directed w/ such skill by Cathey Sawyer and the outstanding local talent, this production has surpassed any of our previous experience of "Man of La Mancha." (We have experienced this excellently written musical 40+ times : ) Kenneth Derby as Miguel de Cervantes/Alonso Quijana/Don Quixote, Kenny Wade Marshall as Sancho Panza, and Kim Morgan Dean as Aldonza/Ducinera including an incredible cast & crew (and props) under the direction of Ms Sawyer, has Broadway quality. You will laugh, you will cry, you will be mesmerized!!We say "Congratulations/Well done/BRAVO." Do not kick yourselves if you should miss this delightful, emotional musical at the Greenbrier Valley Theater (I believe that next wkend - June 25 - 28, are it's final performances.) DO NOT MISS IT!!
It is easy to park on the street. All seats are good and close to the stage and folks are friendly. We saw "Man of La Mancha" and they did a great job as always. We drive 2 hrs and then come home so it is a long night but worth it.
Who would have ever expected a top quality musical or opera to be found in a town of only 4,000? Not me, but we were certainly pleasantly surprised last night!!! We attended "Dracula, The Rock Opera" at the GVT. The experience started with a very comfortable lobby and beverage options served in real glasses and mugs that you could carry into the theatre with you. The venue is small, but that adds to the intimacy of the performance. The actors/singers were clearly professional, each having an impressive list of credentials from prior performances in their careers. Our highlight on stage was Hannah McGinley as Lucy. Her role began with edgy overtones and led to a solo finale with a very seductive luring as a newly created vampire seeking to take over a child in a graveyard. Perhaps not the best storyline for a child before bedtime, but we thoroughly enjoyed the performance!
The performances by the cast, some of whom are professionals, are great. The theater is small and intimate. Well worth a visit.
My husband and I went to the Greenbrier Valley Theater. We were only in town for a short visit and sadly there was not a show available that would fit our schedule. We were permitted to walk around the theater during the day and view some artwork and photos of some of the previous shows performed. The theater was interesting with some seating and items to view.
Excellent plays, comfortable, easy to get tickets. They support the community! It is in beautiful and enchanting downtown Lewisburg, the coolest small town in America in 2012.
We were very impressed with this theatre. It's an impressive facility, and the performance we saw (Doubt on April 13) was outstanding. Excellent cast!
Wow what a great place to see a show! The place is humble and small but the performances are on par with Broadway. They really care about the theatre and it shows this is a well worth place for a performance.
Dinner musical theater. Enjoy a night out. It can also be a night at the opera style event which everyone should experience at least once.
We love the summer "PB & J Cafe" series that the Greenbrier Valley Theatre does for kids. Our kids have been to several and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. The food is not the best, but then, we're not really there for the food, are we?! The actors are top-notch and go out of their way to keep the kids engaged and involved in the action. Our group ranged in age from toddler through 10 years old and everyone enjoyed it (even the grown ups!).
Just saw Duck Hunter Shoots Angel" by Mitch Albom, and I can't imagine one could find a better production anywhere. The actors were fantastic and delivered a first rate performance that made out entire group laugh out loud. We fully intend to make the 2 hour drive again to see "The Crucible".
This is an excellent small theater in a small town. The seating on risers allows a perfect view of the action without looking through heads. The actors are professional. This theater allowed you to easily see the facial expressions which adds so much to carrying the dialogue. There is a bar and you can carry your drinks into the theater. After seeing so much average to poor summer theater over the years, this theater is a gem that is not to be missed.
We saw a great play. The music was wonderful, and the actors and actresses were fabulous. Play was based on a real story of a young man who has a tight wonderful relationship with his family and community. He is searching to making a career for himself, by creating a tourist attraction of the interior of a cave, I believe in Kentucky. The story is beautiful, but also tragic.
Average but fun. If you need to throw a party, rent the lobby...great place. Has visual art shows inteh lobby to show case locals.
