we found this place by accident while riding around the city doing some geocaching while in town visiting family. Very cool place enjoyed looking around at the different types of buildings
This is very impressive group of buildings for the roundhouse. It was closed but next time hope to take a tour. Looks like restoration is on going. Someday it will be completed and open on a regular schedule for enthusiasts.
We were there on a day that the roundhouse was open to the public. It was very interesting to see, and I could only imagine what it must have been like when it was busy and bustling! There is talk of finishing it off to make a public meeting space. I sure would like to see more work done, as there is so much potential here! If the restoration work continues, I could see this as a real unique and great rental location for events! I would love to see more interactive and multimedia exhibits. Love that the old equipment is there to explore, and can't wait to see the restored caboose! Our children enjoyed exploring the roundhouse.
The museum wasn't open and none of the old buildings were open but we were able to see the roundhouses. The remains of one still stands. Parts of the movie Razorwalkers was filmed there. If the museum and buildings had been open I'm sure the review would have been higher.
The B & O Roundhouse that stands today was built in 1866 and over time fell into disrepair in the 1980s. It, along with two other railroad shops on either side of it, has been restored by the Berkeley County Roundhouse Authority. It is open for special occasions when former railroad workers discuss the railroad shop complex. Blue prints, photographs and railroad items are on display. I was very impressed with the entire shops complex, but disturbed that a similar roundhouse stood near by well into the 90s when vandals entered the built and caught it on fire, completely destroy. Only a small portion of the second roundhouse stands today. With the daunting cost to rebuild the structure, there are no plans to restore it.
The visitors center said that starting May 1, thru October the Roundhouse will be open on Saturdays and Sundays as part of a Museum program. That is great to hear!
The Round House is the last cast iron frame roundhouse in USA and well worth checking out I'm from Wheeling and have stopped here about 4 times to bad that you can not tour the building I would love to see the inside.Lots of trains going by if your there at the right time.
This roundhouse is a beautifully restored quite rare cast iron building. There is a lot of history here. Stonewall Jackson raided the railway yard and dragged engines by horse from here to Virginia. That action pre-dates the current structure, built in the 1870's. This was also the site of the first massive strike by industrial workers.Unfortunately, you can actually get into the buildings a few days a year. Mostly, you have to look from afar.
