It absolutely worth the stop, both the top and bottom are beautiful. It's very easy to park, and a little bit walk brings you right at the dam. It is very loud down there. Take your time, enjoy the nature sound and beautiful view.
The dam has parking lots and viewing platforms within easy walking distance. The paths are paved. Nice view of Summersville Lake and view of lower dam where rafts are put into the river. Worth a stop.
This was really amazing to see. You can park at designated areas at the top before driving down to the dam. The views are amazing! Once down by the dam you can see the unbelievable amount of water being released. Should you be there in the fall Sept or October they actually open more gates to drain down the Summersville Lake to the winter level. This is when people from all over the world come to white water raft the river with the additional release of water. Definatley worth the ride to see if your in the area.
Visited the Dam area along with Summersville Lake & the surrounding recreational area. Great place for both families & solo travelers!
To not live near the ocean or huge lake, Summersville Lake offers an amazing and large place for my new hobby of SUP. The "no wake" zone is huge and lots of little spots to explore. The lake is very clean and surrounded by beautiful trees. One of the easiest spots to put in is at the Marina, early morning is easy and has the morning progresses it can get very busy.
I highly recommend visiting the Summersville Lake. My 2 adult sons rented kayaks at the boat house and enjoyed a 6 hour rental for about $80 each. The Lake is so beautiful and the scenery is gorgeous. The water is very clear and warm. A great day and a beautiful place!
Several deer ran down the side of the road and just missed seeing a mother bear and her two cubs crossing the Dam.
We stopped at the Summersville Dam to have a view of the lake. There's an overlook beside the road. It was a beautiful sunny day that made for some great photos.
It is 2,280 feet long and at 390 feet tall it is almost as high as a forty story building. It is what is described as a "rock-fill dam" and is the second largest of this type in the eastern US..You can stick your toes in, fish from the rocks, or just admire the scene. It is worth a look. There is also a little hidden FREE campground in the parking lot with potty facilities
