First, there seems to be some confusion in the reviews between the Abita Brewpub in Abita Springs, which sells food as well as Abita beers and this place, the actual brewery on Highway 36 between Abita Springs and Covington. There's no food here, but plenty of free beer! We've taken these types of brewery tours across America and they're usually filled with long explanations of techniques, marches through the brewing and bottling areas, followed by a beer or two. Here at Abita, the tour starts with beer, which you draw yourself from the 12-15 taps behind the bar, and you're encouraged to return to try more throughout the tour. A couple of well-done, educational videos were shown, followed by a brief six minute tour of the brewing and fermenting areas. Then it was back for more beer until about an hour after the visit's start when the taps were shut down. If you're a brewing fusspot who wants details on grains and aging, you'll be disappointed, but if you just want a pleasant hour with convivial hosts and a wonderland of free beer to try, this tour is for you.
Our southern California friends who were visiting were very pleasantly surprised that this little brewery made such wonderful beer! What pleased them most was the brewery's suggestion to blend different beers for a completely new flavor! We had a great time sampling the many different beers at Abita Brewing Co.
Shop is nice, but can be crowded. Tour is somewhat short., but informative. Video on brewery history is good. Tasting is very cool, lots of options - and FREE.
This is an awesome way to kill some time in Covington / Northshore area. There is a closed toe shoe policy, so if you wear flip flops, you gotta put these little plastic bag booties on...kind of weird. Just go ahead and wear closed toe shoes. There are games in the taproom to pass the time, great patio for when the weather is nice, and it was all you can drink for the time allotted. Come thirsty! Great local beer too!Extremely friendly staff and a there is some local art for purchase as well. Absolutely great place to hang out for a few hours in the afternoon.
Part of the charm of this local pub, is the small town in which it resides - Abita Springs, LA. Originally this was a healing spa town for wealthy New Orleanians to escape yellow fever & other summer diseases. The pub serves a wide variety of beers brewed in Abita, and as with most Louisiana restaurants, the food is great. It is a fun, friendly place frequented by locals.
My son and I were looking for something to do on a Saturday afternoon. The Abita fit the bill perfectly! We went thinking we could sample some beer and we had an excellent time (you don't even have to take the tour.
So we weren't just thrilled over this beer, but for a light, refreshing brew it wasn't bad. Citrus notes, finishes clean. But then, we're spoiled living in Colorado where you can get any type of microbrew imaginable haha
Went here to taste the Abita beer, had a few and all were average for a micro brewery, other problem was beer had very little carbonation and almost tasted flat, food was good but pricey, the bartender seem to simply ignore me for the first 3-4 minutes I was at the bar in front of her and really was not all that friendly, the bar was clean but dark, I wasn't impressed,
Got a chance to visit the Abita Brewery and their Brew Pub while in New Orleans for a few days and I was overwhelmed by the employees and staff there. From my server in the restaurant to the tour staff, tasting room and gift shop staff, their main concern was making me feel welcome and being sure that I got to see everything involved with the making of Abita beers. I learned many new things about the brewing of beer from Liz, our tour guide. Been several years since I toured the Anheuser Busch brewery in St. Louis and I wasn't expecting such a quality production system from what is a comparatively a small operation. From the days of their original location in the now Brew Pub location to their present location in an expanding plant they have developed in high quality producer of some outstanding beers. Got to talk to several line employees and each of them takes personal pride in their plant and the quality of the beer they produce. Great way to spend an afternoon in the small Louisiana town of Abita Springs.
...then this is the tour for you. There is no charge for the tour, which begins with brief intro about the company and the beers. Then the bar opens. For half an hour you are welcome to pour yourself samples of any of the beers (or root beer) that are on tap. Then the actual tour begins. It lasts about 10-15 minutes and you look at lots of shiny tanks. Then back to the bar for another round or so of free beers. We didn't stay until the next tour begins, so I don't know how long the bar stays open.
Tour last about an hour, but most of the time is spent in the bar area sampling beers and watching a video. The tour itself is only about 5-10 minutes
OK food. Nice grounds. Hard to find. We went with a big group. Wish there was some more special beers that i couldn't get anywhere else.
Abita Beer is becoming a favorite locally and all over the world. Special tours of the brewery and beer tastings are given free. They are very informative. Food card recipes with beer descriptions on the reverse side(kinda neat and useful). Do check for times and go early for a ticket to get in the next tour!!The brewery is located on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain from NewOrleans. If you are in N.O.(On the south shore) cross the Causeway-24mi.bridge-another free experience! Have fun
Nice little brewery. It is amazing to see how suck a small brewery is getting their tasty beverage so far out there. I am a fan.
The brewer offers free 1 hour tours and tasting. There is no skimping on the tasting but you have limited time - about an hour. The folks that run the tours are great. There is a gift shop and some specialties you can purchase. They brew root beer and though I'm not much of a soft drink person, the root beer is really good. (purchase at the gift shop). They allow sampling most of the current full time and seasonal brews. My personal favorites are the strawberry harvest lager and the purple haze flagship lager. They are all good in my opinion though. Well worth the trip even from the south shore of Ponchartrain.....
