I've tried the rums made here, in Thibodaux, and in New Orleans. I must say that Bayou Rum is the best of the 3. You can taste the Sugar cane in each sip of the clear silver version. The spiced rum has the feeling of an inside hug, and the Satsuma is better than, and unlike any other citrus blended liquor I have ever had. I can't wait for the release of the dark rum we sampled on the tour. The tour! What interesting fun! Begins with a film of the history of Rum in Louisiana, and the history of this fairly new venture, Bayou Rum. One of the owners is featured in the film, and he gave the tour! The end of the tour brings you to a large rustic bar for Rum tastings, and in Louisiana, that leads to stories and recipes, between the bartender and others on the tour. All in all, a great stop. Give yourself about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to enjoy it all.
this was a pleasant surprise...it was a free tour so i wasnt expecting too much but i enjoyed it very much...the film was helpful and our tour guide was very nice and pleasant...he gave some good info on the rum industry...and the best part of all was of course the sampling of the rum...it was very very very good...
The tour was was very interesting. Loved the smell and decor of the building. All local products - cypress, sugarcane, etc. The entire process and equipment was discussed, as well as the importance of the local sugarcane being used in the product. Loved how they use all local vendors for the rum. The rum sampling was great! Satsuma rum was delicious, as well as the spiced rum with the hot apple cider. Tasted like you were drinking apple pie. Really different type of outing. Get ready to spend in the gift shop. You will want to buy each of the rums.
We passed a sign on I-10 and decided to stop in to break up our road trip. This distillery has only been operating for less than 18 months. The rum maker was very knowledgeable and gave thorough explanations of the process. Tastings are offered at the end of the tour at no charge. The 3 rums (white, spiced and a citrus) were all nice and easily drinkable. We purchased some for gifts.
This was a return visit. We had previously participated in the tour on our last visit. The tour was great and very informative. The gift shop is great too - as was the rum! It is conveniently located on the service road at I-10 so it is easy to access.
Rum distillery tour is fascinating. Video intro is top notch. Tasting is lovely. Be prepared to buy one of each of their 3 types of 100% American rum.
We were driving home from NOLA and saw a sign decided to stop since my better half is a rum fanatic, we were so glad we did! Though we didn't have enough time to take the tour, we did get a very nice tasting and shopped around a little. The rum is fantastic and after tasting the Satsuma I had to take a bottle of that home with me as well! The people were so welcoming and friendly they made us feel like old friends. Now we are faced with the question of how we are going to replace our bottles when we run out living in South Texas!
If you enjoy rum, do yourself a big favor and drop by Lacassine, LA and get you some of the best tasting spiced rum this side of the sun. The distillery gift shop has all kinds of treats for everyone. We didn't have time to take the tour this trip, but we will definitely be back.
Louisiana Spirits produces Bayou Rum Silver and Bayou Rum Spiced. The place opened in 2011. It is beautifully decorated and there are rough hewn timbers on the ceiling. Unfortunately, they were making renovations and there were no activitites taking palce in the bottling, labeling, packing, and shipping departments. The owner of the factory was the person who gave the tour. Afterwards, we finished in the bar room where we were given a taste of the two rums, a new drink they are experimenting with, and a hot buttered rum drink. And it was all free1
If you have the chance to go to Lacassine, LA, please take the opportunity to go and visit this factory. It looks small from the interstate, but the the looks will definitely deceive you. Once inside the gift shop is filled with all kinds of souvenirs...for the older ones and younger ones. The 15 minute film is very informative and the tour is great. Huge copper kettles and the cleanest little factory I have seen in a long time. The tour itself is not very long and you get to see most of the production processes. The company has only been in operation for 7 months and only open to tourists for a couple of months. They have already won gold and silver awards for their rum and once you have tasted the samples you will know why! A very enjoyable experience!!!!
The Lake Charles newspaper ran an article on the grand opening of Bayou Rum and as soon as we could get a road trip together we had to go. The distillery is just on the south side of Interstate 10 just west of the Lacassine exit. We were coming in from the West so we saw it in advance and made our way there with little trouble. The grounds are quite a surprise since they have only been officially open for a couple of months. Nice water features and a big impressive entry way lead to the gift shop/ exhibit hall/ tasting room and tour. They offer 3 tours a day presently and it only takes 20 or 30 minutes depending on the number of questions they get and how anxious people are to get to the tasting. The tour is pretty straitforward but it is nice to get to see the equipment up close. The tour guide was very well informed and answered all of our questions with good humor. One point of special interest to me was the beautifully appointed and spotless laboratory where they do quality assurance on the product through each phase of the distilling process. Having spent over 40 years in labs of varying quality I can definately appreciate a good one when I see it. The tasting at the end of the tour featured a sample of each of the currently available products - the clear standard rum and the spiced rum. Since we toured in the winter we were also treated to a sample of hot buttered rum made with their spiced rum (recipe available at the checkout). All were splendid and the tasting hints from the tour guide were extra helpful in enjoying the tasting. After the tasting we tarried a while in the gift shop and were astounded at the variety of Brand labeled merchandise available. In short a very memorable and pleasant way to pass an hour of so on a quick road trip from the Lake Charles area.
