I spent an interesting hour here this week - I was ignorant of this important battle and was impressed how it was presented and the interesting intro movie and exhibits. well worth a visit if passing by but wouldn't personally make a special trip for itRob

Few people outside of Texas-Louisiana have ever heard of this Civil War battlefield. Unfortunate for them because this location was the last decisive major victory by a Confederate army. A Federal invasion was repelled and sent retreating all the way back to the safety of the Mississippi River. Although small compared to the great set-to battles east of the Mississippi, the story of the Red River Campaign up to Mansfield and the six week Union retreat is unique among the annals of war. The museum has recently been renovated. Exhibits of artifacts, weapons, uniforms, and medical equipment are well worth seeing. This is a day park with a clean picnic area and a walking trail to get a feel of the Federal lines at the onset of the battle. A modest fee is charged, but seniors are free. The old town of Mansfield should also be taken in. Consider a visit when various events are scheduled throughout the year.

I was there while renovations were being done to the museum so I didn't get a chance to see the exhibit. Attended an amazing program about women in the Civil War. Very enthusiastic staff. Looking forward to a return visit
